Oyo govt. promises to overhaul security in public schools

Published

The Oyo State Government has expressed concerns about porous security in public schools across the State, noting that challenges such as theft of furniture and destruction of facilities in schools would be brought on the front burner by the present administration.

The Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Adeniran said this today, during inspection of some selected Primary schools within Ibadan metropolis.

Adeniran noted that the repositioning and transformation agenda of Governor Seyi Makinde led-administration in the Education sector would also ensure the overhaul of security in the sector, so that teachers and students would learn in a very conducive environment.

Expressing displeasure at the state of facilities met in some public schools after the lock-down, Adeniran promised that Oyo State Government would put into urgent consideration security of public schools, in order to forestall vandalization of properties in schools.

He noted that “we would put the security of these schools on the front burner. This would forestall theft of furniture and other classroom items, which most teachers complained about”.

While he commended teachers for their dedication and commitment to duty, he also appealed to them to ensure adequate preparation of pupils in the State, towards their common entrance examination.

Adeniran also expressed happiness about the adherence of teachers and students in schools visited to the strict COVID-19 Protocols, which he observed was a good way to start.

Dr. Adeniran who was accompanied by the Executive Secretary, Mr. Olusanjo Adeniyi and other officials of the Board visited OLGC Primary School, Odo-Okun, IMG Mokola, C&S New Eden Pry. School, Mokola and IMG Oje-Igosun. The team would also visit schools outside the metropolis tomorrow.

The Adamawa State Government on Tuesday threatened to shut down primary schools in the state for reopening without approval.

The state Commissioner for Education, Wilbina Jackson, made this known during a meeting with the state chapter of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools in Yola.

Jackson emphasized that the COVID-19 guidelines must be followed by all stakeholders to prevent the spread of the virus in the state.

According to her, “The National Policy on education did not state that primary six should write Common Entrance, that is what we explained to them.

“It is all about automatic promotion, no one is demoted. So that is not an excuse as far as we are concerned. We are here to obey guidelines according to the Federal Ministry of Education on COVID-19″.

The Commissioner further explained that the government has not approved the reopening of primary schools nor the conduct of common entrance examinations in the state.

She condemned the situation where officials sent by the ministry to monitor compliance of schools in line with the COVID-19 guidelines were prevented from doing so.

Oyo State government on Tuesday, announced a shift in the Common Entrance examination into its schools of science from Wednesday 19th August to Tuesday 1st, September, 2020.

The shift, according to the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, signed by the Commissioner, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye was because of a clash of the examination date with the ongoing West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), in which students were expected to write Economics and Agricultural Science in their year 2020 West African Examination Council (WAEC).

Also, the date of the screening test for placement of pupils in terminal classes in public and private primary schools into Junior Secondary School 1(JSS1) in Oyo State has been shifted from Thursday 20th August 2020 to Saturday 22nd August, 2020 due to another clash of the date of the exercise with another WAEC subject.
