Oyo 2019: I am the most qualified governorship candidate – Shittu.

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, Barrister Adebayo Shittu has declared that he is the most qualified candidate for the governorship election come 2019.

Shittu gave the hint on Saturday in an interactive session with members of Southwest Group of Online Publishers (SWEGOP) in Ibadan.

The minister stated that going by his vast experience, having served in all the three branches of government made him the best-placed candidate, saying that this will certainly add a lot of value to the benefit of Oyo state.

Shittu also expressed certitude that he will clinch the APC’s ticket, just as he guaranteed maximum support and assistance from the leadership of the party in the state.

In his words: “let me assure you that everyone of them will support me and I dare say even; that Ajimobi will support me by the Grace of God, I can foresee that he will be the one to raise my hand up as the candidate of the party.

“Governor Ajimobi is appreciative of what Oke Ogun has done for him in the 2015 elections when Ibadan refused to vote for him. They voted for Accord party, but we in Oke Ogun voted  for Governor Ajimobi and true to type he tells everybody that it is the turn of Oke Ogun.

“But that is not to say that I want to be measured on the standard of coming from Oke Ogun because by every yardstick of merit, not just because I come from Oke Ogun, I am the most qualified of all the candidates. I have served in the executive, I have served in the legislature and served in the judiciary and today by the grace of God I am the minister, the experience I have had as a minister of communications will certainly add a lot of value to the benefit of Oyo state”.

Promising to do things differently in tandem with what the late sage and political idol, Awolowo did, the ex-lawmaker, Shittu claimed, ” I am the only one who has had direct training at Awolowo’s political feat while he was alive, the greatest politician that ever lived in Nigeria.

“I sat with him, we formulate policies together, policies about free Education, free health services, policies about employment for all and policies about integrated infrastructural and rural development. I have all of these in my brain and I assure the people of  this state that my regime will be a refreshingly different from every other government that has ever happened.

“I am not kidding. For me, if I had started politics at age 26 and I am now 64 and consistently I have been in politics, nobody have such credentials, for me politics is the most important business anybody can do because it is through politics that you can impact the greatest value into the lives of people”, he maintained.

‘Cooperate with us’, Oyo ALGON tells Makinde

The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Oyo state chapter on Monday called on Governor Seyi Makinde to cooperate with the elected council chairmen as they announced  plans to resume immediately in obedience to the judgement of the Supreme Court and other Courts.

Oyo ALGON in a statement signed by its Chairman, Prince Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye in Ibadan, the state capital and made available to Mega Icon Magazine also disclosed   that the association was fully aware of the letter the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), sent to the Oyo State Government through the Office of the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, calling the attention of Oyo State Government to its illegal and unconstititional act of dissolving democratically elected local government administration in the state.

He added that the AGF sited and relied on several subsisting court judgements including Supreme Court which is the highest court in the country.

The statement reads, “This has been our own position too in ALGON Oyo State that no governor or House of Assembly has the right to embark on a futile unconstitutional journey to tramp on the law in order to achieve a predetermined illegal act like what Governor Makinde had done.

“Democracy survives on the rule of law and strict adherence to democratic tenets. Democracy is sustained by rule of law and not rule or caprice of men. As the erudite late Lord Justice Denning posited: “Be ye never so high, the law is above you.

“In view of the latest positive development that definitely complement our resolute struggle to defend democracy and grassroots governance, we want to assure the governor and the good people of Oyo State that we as elected chairmen of local government and local council development areas are always ready to work with the state government to advance our dear state to greater height as soon as we resume duty .

“His Excellency, Governor Makinde has nothing to fear since we have no personal grudge against him or any official of his government beyond our principled stand that the constitution, rule of law and Supreme Court judgement which has a national jurisdiction must be obeyed at all times.

“We once again appreciate all our members who are steadfast to defend our democratically given mandate and grassroots democracy. Now that we are resuming, we appeal to our members including councilors to redouble their efforts in giving their utmost best immediately we resume.
