Fresh N100bn Loan: Oyo APC Tells Makinde to Refund Every Kobo After Office

Published

on

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Governor Seyi Makinde over the approval of a fresh N100bn loan, vowing to hold him accountable for any public funds allegedly misappropriated during his tenure.

The party also warned against spending over N4.2bn belonging to the state’s 33 local government councils on the proposed December 29, 2026 council election.

In a statement issued in Ibadan on Wednesday, the APC Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, described the loan approval as an act of recklessness and insensitivity to residents’ plight.

The loan request was conveyed to the Oyo State House of Assembly in a letter read by the Speaker, Debo Ogundoyin, on Monday and subsequently approved by the lawmakers on Wednesday.

The governor reportedly said the facility would be used to refinance existing loans and fund ongoing infrastructure projects. However, the APC questioned the justification for the fresh borrowing, citing the monthly allocations received by the state and its 33 local government areas.

The party also alleged contract cost inflation, poor compliance with due process and repeated supplementary budget requests under Makinde’s administration.

Citing the reported resignation of the Director-General of the state’s Due Process Office and other senior officials, the APC called for greater scrutiny of the administration’s financial management.

It said Makinde and anyone found culpable of misappropriating public funds should be made to account for their actions after leaving office on May 29, 2027.

“Engr. Makinde and his cronies shall be made to cough out every kobo of the money belonging to our dear state which they have misappropriated while in office,” the party declared.

The state government’s response to the allegations was not available at the time of filing this report.

Oyo: Alli Questions Reported N100bn Loan, Warns Makinde Against Fresh Debt

Published

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has questioned a reported plan by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to obtain a fresh N100bn loan, warning against financial decisions that could saddle the state with additional debt ahead of the 2027 change of government.

Alli, through his campaign organisation, also raised concerns over the N200bn bond approved by the Oyo State House of Assembly in June to refinance existing debts, urging the government to disclose the implications of its borrowing plans for the state’s finances.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Director of Media and Publicity of the Alli Campaign Organisation, Bisi Oladele, the organisation also faulted a proposed N4.2bn expenditure on local government elections, which it said was facing litigation involving members of the governor’s party.

The organisation warned that decisions taken in the closing months of Makinde’s administration must not create avoidable financial obligations for the incoming government.

It acknowledged the governor’s constitutional authority to administer the state until the end of his tenure but insisted that such powers should be exercised with due regard for fiscal responsibility and accountability.

“We acknowledge that Governor Makinde still has about seven months before the expiration of his tenure and retains the constitutional authority to administer the affairs of the state within the limits of the law.

“We, however, warn that the remaining months of his term must not become an opportunity for reckless expenditure, questionable borrowing or the creation of financial liabilities that could constrain future governments,” the statement said.

On the reported N100bn commercial bank facility, the campaign organisation demanded clarification on its purpose, interest rate, repayment structure, collateral arrangements and the projects it was intended to finance.

It also called for a detailed account of the N200bn bond, including the debts to be refinanced, the interest obligations attached to them, the bond’s pricing and maturity period, and the expected savings to the state.

The organisation urged commercial banks and other financial institutions to conduct thorough assessments of the state’s repayment capacity before granting any fresh credit facilities, stressing the need to comply with applicable financial regulations.

It said lenders should not compromise prudent lending standards when dealing with a sitting government, adding that any questionable lending decisions should be subjected to appropriate scrutiny.

The campaign organisation further called on the Makinde administration to publish an updated statement of the state’s domestic and external debts, debt-servicing obligations, outstanding contractual liabilities and projected fiscal position ahead of the next administration’s inauguration in May 2027.

It also urged the state House of Assembly to scrutinise borrowing proposals and major expenditure approvals, rather than treating requests from the executive as routine matters.

“Every kobo borrowed today must be justified, every expenditure must withstand public scrutiny, and every financial commitment must serve the enduring interests of our people,” the statement added.

The organisation warned that Oyo State should not enter the next administration with undisclosed liabilities or financial commitments that could limit its capacity to meet public needs, insisting that the governor must remain accountable for the state’s finances until the end of his tenure.

Folarin Backs Alli, Moves to Reconcile Aggrieved Oyo APC Leaders

Ex-Senate Leader pledges support for Tinubu, other party candidates in 2027

Former Senate Leader Teslim Folarin has declared support for the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, pledging to unite aggrieved party leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Folarin made the declaration on Monday when Alli visited him in Ibadan as part of efforts to reconcile party members dissatisfied with the outcome of the APC governorship primary.

Folarin, who was among the party chieftains believed to be aggrieved over the emergence of Alli as the candidate, said he had decided to move forward, expressing confidence that other aggrieved leaders would eventually join hands with the party to secure victory.

Addressing Alli and other supporters in Yoruba, the former lawmaker acknowledged the grievances within the party, arguing that those who felt hurt could not simply be expected to set aside their differences without genuine efforts to address their concerns.

He said, “Only a bastard will be wronged and will not be angry. In the same way, only a bastard will reject apologies from those who wronged him.”

Folarin explained that his disappointment was understandable, having invested 26 years in his ambition to become governor, but said the party could not afford to allow its internal disagreements to jeopardise its electoral chances.

“If you now hold me down and say I shouldn’t be angry, that will be unrealistic,” he said.

He commended Senator Femi Lanlehin and Professor Taoheed Adedoja for their roles in the reconciliation process but argued that their efforts would yield limited results without the involvement of influential leaders who were themselves aggrieved.

According to him, the party must act quickly to resolve its differences before the disagreements cause further damage.

“What do we stand to gain if we allow things to collapse totally?” he asked.

Folarin also acknowledged the contributions of an APC chieftain, Idris, to the reconciliation efforts, saying the need to protect the party’s future had made it necessary for leaders to reconsider their positions.

He urged party members to put the disagreements behind them and focus on the task ahead, stressing that political differences should not prevent members from working towards a common goal.

The former lawmaker disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had appointed him as the coordinator of the APC’s activities in Oyo State, adding that his responsibility extended beyond the presidential election to all party candidates.

“You will notice that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed me as Coordinator of Oyo State. He didn’t ask me to deliver President Bola Ahmed Tinubu only. It is all the candidates,” he said.

Folarin pledged to use his knowledge of the party’s internal dynamics to reach out to aggrieved members across the state’s local government areas.

He, however, warned that the party must address complaints about the treatment of loyal members, lamenting that those who worked for electoral victories were often overlooked when rewards were distributed.

“The reward system in this party, not just in Oyo State, is very bad. When we finish working, the people who did nothing are the ones who get rewarded. That will not happen again. We will not accept it,” he said.

On Alli’s candidacy, Folarin said the manner in which the ticket emerged had contributed to the discontent among some party leaders but maintained that the candidate had the political experience needed for the contest.

He urged Alli to ensure that party members who contributed to the APC’s success were not sidelined.

“Our candidate, Sharafadeen Alli, is a politician. It was the manner in which his candidacy emerged that made some people to be aggrieved. But if we put that aside, he is a politician,” he said.

Folarin added that established party members and newer political actors must combine their efforts to secure victory for the APC in the state.

He also challenged party members to improve on the votes recorded for Tinubu in Oyo State during the 2023 presidential election.

“The votes we gave Asiwaju Tinubu in 2023, we must improve on it this time around,” he said.

He assured supporters that he would not take the responsibility entrusted to him lightly, urging them to see the assignment as a collective duty.

“I do not like to fail when I take on a responsibility. The task entrusted to me has also been entrusted to all of us,” he said.
