Black Women Hold Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America Titles For First Time Ever
In a historic feat, three black women simultaneously reign as Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America.
Miss North Carolina’s Cheslie Kryst completed the beauty pageant trifecta on Thursday when she was crowned the 2019 Miss USA, joining Miss Teen USA winner Kaliegh Garris and Miss America Nia Franklin. Kryst, 28, will now advance to the Miss Universe competition.
The oldest of the three pageants is Miss America, which dates back to the early 1920s but only began accepting women of color in the 1940s. Cheryl Browne became the first black women to participate in 1970 and Vanessa Williams was crowned the first black Miss America in 1983. She was later forced to resign her post after nude photos emerged toward the end of her reign.
Miss USA and Miss Teen USA have been held annually since 1952 and 1983 respectively. The former named its first black winner, Carike Anne-Marie Gist, in 1990 and Janel Bishop became the first black Miss Teen USA the following year.
Amid changing gender norms and increased scrutiny over female objectification, the three beauty pageants have implemented significant changes in recent years. The Miss Universe Organization, which oversees Miss USA and Miss Teen USA, began allowing transgender women to participate in 2012, and the Miss America organization scrapped the swimsuit segment of the competition last year.
“Mine is the first generation to have that forward-looking mindset that has inclusivity, diversity, strength and empowered women,” Kryst said during her crowning speech. “I’m looking forward to continued progress in my generation.”
The new Miss USA topped an ethnically diverse field of finalists, highlighting a growing shift away from longstanding Eurocentric standards of beauty. New Mexico’s Alejandra Gonzalez, the first runner-up, is of Mexican descent, and Oklahoma’s Triana Browne, the second runner-up, has Native American heritage and an African American mother.
A former Division I track star turned civil litigation attorney, Kryst was hailed for addressing the #MeToo movement during the pageant, stating that the outcry over sexual harassment has not gone too far. “#MeToo and #TimesUp are about making sure that we foster safe and inclusive workplaces in our country,” said Kryst, who holds an M.B.A. and a law degree from Wake Forest University and provides free legal work to prisoners who have been unjustly sentenced.
Tragedy as trailer crushes 4 to death on Ibadan-Oyo expressway
AT LEAST four people were crushed to death on Ibadan-Oyo expressway on Sunday when a trailer rammed into a taxi at a failed portion on the expressway.
Other motorists burst into wailing on sighting corpses of the accident victims which occurred near the overhead bridge in Akinyele area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The trailer was reported to have rammed into the taxi which slowed down to navigate through the failed portion. According to Eye witnesses, the accident was as a result of the trailer’s brake failure which made it impossible for the driver to avoid hitting the vehicle. Both the corpses and two other occupants, who sustained varying degrees of injury, were taken to State Hospital, Adeoyo.
The accident, which occurred at about 12:15 pm, led to massive traffic gridlock on the busy road. Several portions of the road have failed near Ibadan, making it dangerous for motorists, especially at night.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in Oyo State, Mr Seun Onijala, who also confirmed the incident informed that a team of the corps’ men in Akinyele had been dispatched to the scene. Onijala, however assured that normalcy would be returned within hours, urging motorists not to panic about the traffic situation.
Oyedepo ‘richer’ than Atiku – Omokri attacks Keyamo
Reno Omokri, the former aide to Ex-president goodluck Jonathan has attacked Festus Keyamo, spokesman of the reelection campaign of President Muhammadu Buhari for condemning Bishop David Oyedepo’s meeting with Atiku Abubakar
Keyamo on Thursday, while condemning Obasanjo’s endorsement of Atiku attacked men of God- David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Tabernacle, Mathew Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto diocese; and Ahmad Gumi, Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, for accompanying Abubakar to Obasanjo’s residence.
“We also note with interest the full participation of some “men of God” in the entourage of the Peoples’ Democratic Party for this political re-alignment.
“We are glad that they have publicly declared their partisan interest and urge all Nigerians to see all their previous, present and future attacks on President Buhari from their pulpits in the context of partisan politics and not in the context of nationalistic or altruistic commitment. We wish them well,” he had said.
Reacting to Keyamo’s statement, Omokri on his Twitter page urged President Buhari to caution him.
He described the statement by Keyamo as silly, adding that the Bishop could be richer than Atiku hence his visit was not for any financial gain.
The ex-presidential spokesman wrote: “It is silly of Festus Keyamo to insult Bishop Oyedepo as someone who endorsed Atiku because of gain.
“David Oyedepo is probably richer than HE Atiku Abubakar. He is a man that has applied Godly principles and succeeded. President Buhari may want to caution Keyamo.”
