Marlians: An emerging clan of millennials

No doubt, what occupied the minds of the youths nowadays is far more than development in Science and Technology but to grow in anti-social activities and violence. These days, listening to music is almost on everybody’s favourite list because it is somewhat a sort of remedy, a lift for the soul up, and a soothe the mind.

However, studies have revealed that music may potentially have the most negative effect on teens as a result of explicit lyrics, messages of these genres, accompanied by videos or graphics containing destructive themes. Presently, there is an emerging clan of Millennials in Nigeria popularly known as Marlians. The question from a sane mind is who are the Marlians?

Marlians are the fanatic followers and fans of a Nigerian singer and songwriter, Afeez Fashola professionally known as ‘Naira Marley’. Naira Marley is presently enjoying a huge fan base more than any other artist in Nigeria. Almost on a regular basis, he releases musical hits which evoke memories, images, emotions and feelings into the conscious minds of the millenials.

The youths are now influenced by his music and music videos. It was concluded that the majority of the youths, including teenagers, have a strong affection for his style of dressing, characteristics, speaking of Naira Marley. They have cultivated more habit of watching and listening to his music than any sensible musician in order to improve and master all his ways.

Either consciously or unconsciously, many young boys and men, even girls (ladies) now, publicly identify and associate with the Marlians. This tribe – ‘Marlians’ are spreading not like wildfire but like the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Interestingly, many prominent Pastors and Imams children, top politicians children and children of top civil servants, among others, are the followers of Naira Marley!

Investigations also unearthed that the Marlians, just like any other group, exhibit some predominant characteristics. The female Marlians don’t wear a bra, while the Male among them wear trouser to half of their buttocks and adhered strictly to ‘Zero belt’, that’s why they are called ‘No-belt gang.’

Naira Marley gave this rule in the lyrics of his song titled PUTA. He specifically mentioned that folks should believe in and follow the practices of “Zero belts, thousand trousers”.

Marlians consume drugs and alcohol excessively. Almost all his videos encouraged alcohol and India hemp, among other drugs. Naira Marley called himself ‘Igbolabi’ meaning he was born to smoke weed. Unfortunately, these young boys and girls, who pride him as their role model, also consume alcohol and drugs to express their loyalty to the Marlians group.

Since Naira Marley wears long dreads, most of his followers also keep dreads.

The group labelled itself Zero Manners which was established in the lyrics of PUTA, where Naira Marley reiterated that ‘Marlians don’t have manners’. The interpretation of this is that they are meant to defy all manners taught initially and disobey constituted authorities.

Continuing, they have little regard or fear for anything or anyone as reechoed by their Idol, Naira Marley when ‘he forty’ as ‘O fo ti’; meaning that folks should not be afraid of anything whatsoever.

In a related development, the singer promotes get rich quick philosophy by glorifying internet fraud known as ‘Yahoo-Yahoo’. Most of his songs encouraged internet fraud. He believed money made from fraud should be spent on alcohol, drugs, and sex.

Another important rule of Marlians is, “Marlians don’t graduate, they drop-out”. This rule sounds controversial because Naira Marley who said “Big Booty Is Better Than Having A Masters Degree”, graduated with a distinction in business from Peckham Academy and also went ahead to study Business Law at Crossways College.

It is no gainsaying to submit that the influence of Naira Marley through his music and lifestyle in the world among Nigerian youths have become rooted in his behavioural pattern of its audience. The concern now is that his music has affected youths in the way of dressing, speaking and behaviour. He is now the major determinant of their ways of life. He has successfully contributed to a fall’ in the moral standard of our society.

Parents are advised to watch over their wards and children, and also understand the characteristics so that they can proactively learn to engage them in meaningful ventures.

Sean Dampte Partners With Justjojo Ent, Picks Aug 21 For EP Release

Still basking in the euphoria of the success of his hit singles, Adura and Marcelina, Oluyole Oluwaseun, fondly called Sean Dampte by his admirers, has finally unveiled details of his much-touted project, an Extended Play (EP), entitled – Awoodah Rising (Man Like Sean Dampte and the relationship between him and one of the strongest music distribution companies in the United Kingdom, Justjojo Entertainment.

The UK- based Afro-fusion singer took to his verified Instagram account, @seandampte, to hint his fans about the project; a development which ignited the curiosity of many of his fans who have since been disturbing the internet with different anticipatory tags and headlines.

The project, entitled ‘Awoodah Rising- Man Like Sean Dampte’, according to Sean Dampte, which would be released on August 21, 2020, is a six-track EP that tends to unleash the ‘good’ of the said act.

Marcelina, the second track off the EP debuted number 8 on the Black Music Charts a couple of weeks ago, and on its current run of four weeks. Another single, according to the Afrobeat Superstar, which would enjoy massive attention, is ‘Money On My Mind Always – MOMMA’.

“MOMMA is about my journey as an artist. Many artists get caught up in fame and forget what is most important- family. The track talks about my motivation being family. It also speaks about my journey and lay to claim the reputation as one of the pioneers of the Afro-fusion culture,” he said.

Asked what inspired then nomenclature Awoodah, as it reflects in the EP title, and why he felt it was so necessary to release the project at this time, he has this to say: “When I returned to music, I hear people say “Who is that?” and so that inspired me to coin the word Awoodah. And I think it’s time I let people into my world.”

He also opened up on his relationship with the UK-based promoter, Rebecca Junaid, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Justjojo Entertainment. Junaid has worked with several notable Nigerian acts such as Yemi Alade, Selebobo, Tekno, among others.

According to Sean Dampte, ‘Justjojo will be responsible for the global distribution of the EP to the right audience.’

Meanwhile, the tracklist of the EP includes Adura, Money On My Mind Always, Pe’Pe Ft Buju, Marcelina (Remastered), Nkechi Freak Like Me and O’Por.

Yemi Alade joins UNDP’s call for urgent action to protect those hit hardest by COVID-19 surge

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) joined by key voices in international development, reiterates the importance of protecting the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people hit hardest by the socio-economic impact of COVID-19. This call comes under the auspices of the 2020 UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in the event “Half the World: The Many Faces of Social Protection”. Half the world refers to 55 percent of the world’s population that are not covered by social insurance or social assistance, according to ILO data.

Joining the event from Lagos, Nigeria, globally acclaimed Afropop star Yemi Alade shone a spotlight on those suffering the direst consequences of the pandemic, such as young women who are self-employed and are the sole providers for their families.

“We are here to talk about half the world, the half that wakes up every morning to go to work despite and because of the global pandemic,” Alade said. “It’s about the young woman who is struggling to make ends meet and risking her health to provide for her family.”

“Let’s not let billions of the world’s poorest, most vulnerable people fall through the cracks in our society,” she said.

The event was hosted by UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner, who reiterated UNDP’s responsibility for integrated action and called on all development partners to step up on social protection.

“We cannot afford to become inured to poverty, hunger and jobs figures that keep getting worse. We cannot sleepwalk into a new normal. Unprecedented action is needed, and it is needed now,” Steiner said. “There are some great examples of how developing countries are addressing social protection challenges—from cash to supplements income to in-kind assistance that supplements nutrition, to care systems geared towards working women.”

Steiner added: “Unless we bring fresh perspective and ideas to the table, successful action will depend on an uneven patchwork of social assistance, social insurance and systems of care around the world.”

Among other featured speakers at the event were UNDP’s partners from governments and the international development sector, including HE Cina Lawson, Minister of Postal Affairs and Digital Economy of Togo; Reema Nanavaty, Director General of SEWA (Self Employed Women’s Association); Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Dr Guy Standing, Professor at SOAS University of London and co-founder of Basic Income Earth Network; and Guy Ryder, Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), who joined via a video message.

It is no news that the UK based Nigerian born Afro-pop artiste, Sean Dampte, has made huge statements with his craft as far as the music industry is concerned home and abroad. Having the right vibes to always get people groovy, he is now seen as one of the pioneers of a new genre. More so, given his excellent use of genres such as Afrobeat, Pop and Dancehall, he has combined them all together to now create what is known as Afro-Fusion.

He, however, recently embarked on a ‘journey’ in search of his ‘Marcelina’, as most of his fans have tagged it. The whole buzz started when Dampte gave a hint on the release of Marcelina, many of his fans began to wonder what he was up to with that title.  ‘Marcelina’ is a testament to the fact that Sean Dampte is an embodiment of talents; the new single has been touted as the number 1 song for 2020 summer.

He serenades his fans with dance-infused afro sound. A mixture of the sounds you expect to hear at exotic resorts off the coast of Ibiza. The influence behind the song is of a love interest that developed from the dance floor.

Surprisingly, the way Sean Dampte and his team headed shortly after the release of the song online has kept many people talking. Many girls began to vibe and twerk to the much-touted song all over the world while Sean Dampte was said to be crediting their accounts ranging between $2000 and $5000 depending on the appearance and performance of the person.

A report recently surfaced online that he gave out Ksh500,000 to those who danced to his song in Kenya and promised to visit the country as he continues to search for his Marcelina.

Sean Dampte, with his recent ‘Marcelina sojourn’, keeps girls wanting him to appear in their country to meet with him and finally becomes his ‘Marcelina’.
