Why Zidane refused salary increase at Real Madrid

Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, has disclosed that manager, Zinedine Zidane, turned down a major salary increase at the club.

“Zidane refused to take a major salary increase because he felt he hadn’t done enough to deserve it. Players know he’s fair.

“Zidane knows what Madrid is. We are in good hands. This is what gives us a serious edge.

“We have taken a qualitative leap under Zidane. Living in this successful moment is to his merit. We’re playing smart football,” Perez told Cadena SER.

Zidane was rewarded with a new three-year deal last month, which will see him earn around €8million a year.

He became the first coach in the modern era, to successfully defend a Champions League title this year, after defeating Juventus 4-1 in Cardiff on June 3.

The Frenchman also won the La Liga title last season ahead of fierce rivals Barcelona.
