Two Dead, Five Injured in Lagos Building Collapse

Tragedy struck in the Ikota area of Lekki, Ajah, on Tuesday as a two-storey building under construction collapsed, leaving two people dead and several others injured.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the bodies of an adult male and a young boy have been recovered from the rubble, while five adult males with serious injuries have been rescued and taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

NEMA spokesman, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident, stating that more individuals might still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure. “So far, the bodies of an adult male and a young boy were recovered, and five adult males with serious injuries have been rescued and taken to the hospital. Information indicates that more people are likely to still be under the rubble,” Farinloye said.

Emergency response teams, including NEMA and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), are currently conducting search and rescue operations. While NEMA confirmed two fatalities, LASEMA, in a separate statement, reported only one death and four injuries.

LASEMA’s Director-General, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that heavy-duty rescue equipment had been deployed to the scene. “The agency, alongside other stakeholders, was able to rescue the victims while the agency’s heavy-duty equipment has been dispatched,” he said.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collapse, but investigations are expected to be conducted to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As rescue operations continue, residents and workers in the area are urged to remain cautious while emergency responders work to prevent further casualties.
