President Bola Tinubu has urged governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other party stakeholders to support the establishment of state police and the full implementation of local government autonomy.
Tinubu made the call on Thursday at the 14th meeting of the APC National Caucus held in Abuja.
He specifically asked governors to align with the recent judgment of the Supreme Court granting financial autonomy to local government councils, stressing that the ruling must be implemented in practical terms.
According to the President, it is not sufficient for the court to give a verdict without ensuring compliance, noting that statutory allocations meant for local governments must reach them directly.
Tinubu also called for increased inclusion of women in the APC National Caucus, saying greater female representation was necessary to promote gender balance within the party’s leadership structure.
The President’s renewed push for state police comes amid growing calls for decentralised policing as insecurity continues to worsen across parts of the country.
