Tinubu Acknowledges Nigerians’ Hardship Amidst Fuel Subsidy Discussion

President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged the hardships that accompanied his government’s bold reforms.
With unwavering determination, he addressed the pressing issue of ending petroleum subsidies, a move that had seen the cost of this vital commodity surge, thus affecting the cost of living for many Nigerians.
In his address to the nation, President Tinubu urged his fellow citizens to endure these temporary pains, assuring them that he was fully aware of the challenges they faced as a result of his government’s reforms.
He emphasised that these reforms were essential for the nation’s long-term prosperity and stability, noting the importance of collective sacrifice for the greater good.
“I am attuned to the hardships that have come. I have a heart that feels and eyes that see,” he said during his Independence Day broadcast on Sunday.
“I wish to explain to you why we must endure this trying moment. Those who sought to perpetuate the fuel subsidy and broken foreign exchange policies are people who would build their family mansion in the middle of a swamp. I am different. I am not a man to erect our national home on a foundation of mud. To endure, our home must be constructed on safe and pleasant ground.
“Reform may be painful, but it is what greatness and the future require. We now carry the costs of reaching a future Nigeria where the abundance and fruits of the nation are fairly shared among all, not hoarded by a select and greedy few. A Nigeria where hunger, poverty, and hardship are pushed into the shadows of an ever-fading past,” Tinubu added.
“There is no joy in seeing the people of this nation shoulder burdens that should have been shed years ago. I wish today’s difficulties did not exist. But we must endure if we are to reach the good side of our future.
“My government is doing all that it can to ease the load. I will now outline the path we are taking to relieve the stress on our families and households.”

Oyo: Oseni Sympathises with Aleshinloye Market Fire Victims, Calls for Government Support

The Chairman, House Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and member representing Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency, Oyo State, Engr. Aderemi Oseni has expressed solidarity with traders who suffered losses in the recent fire outbreak at Aleshinloye Market, Ibadan.
The inferno, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, engulfed parts of the bustling commercial hub, destroying goods worth millions of naira. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, but the extent of destruction has drawn widespread sympathy from political leaders, business stakeholders, and the general public.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Idowu Ayodele, in Ibadan, the lawmaker described the incident as a tragic setback for hardworking traders who rely on the market for their livelihood. He urged government agencies at all levels to swiftly intervene and support the victims in rebuilding their businesses.
“I stand in solidarity with the traders and entrepreneurs of Aleshinloye Market in this difficult time. Nigeria “Eating” Its Leather Wealth – Minister Warns of 700,000 Lost Jobs, N23bn Revenue

The Federal Government has lamented the neglect of Nigeria’s leather industry, stating that the sector has the potential to generate over N23 billion and provide employment for nearly 700,000 Nigerians.
The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, made this known on Wednesday while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, monitored by Mega Icon Magazine. He expressed concern that Nigerians were consuming hides and skins—materials that could otherwise be used for manufacturing leather products.
“If I tell you now, we are eating shoes, we are eating bags, we are eating belts, somebody begins to wonder, why do you say I’m eating my shoes? I’m eating my bags, I’m eating my belts. Of course, these are hides and skins that we are eating,” he stated.
Maiha stressed that the widespread consumption of animal hides (commonly known as ponmo) as food has resulted in the loss of billions of naira in potential revenue for the leather industry. He emphasized the need for centralized abattoirs and skin collection centers to optimize the use of hides and skins for industrial purposes.
“For you to optimize skin collection, you need a central animal processing unit. By our estimation, that industry can employ almost 700,000 Nigerians and, by value, our own estimation, about N23bn. Now, we are not there yet because of certain incidences,” the minister noted.
Maiha also cited the success of the shoe-making industries in Maiduguri and Aba, where local manufacturers are already producing high-quality footwear, including jungle boots for the armed forces. He argued that Nigeria has the capacity to manufacture most of the shoes currently being imported, urging citizens to embrace locally made products.
The minister further warned against the health hazards of using kerosene to burn animal skins, stressing the need for safer and more hygienic processing methods.
With the right investments and policies, Maiha believes Nigeria’s leather industry could become a major economic driver, creating jobs and boosting local production in the fashion and manufacturing sectors.
