The Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Olushola Alao, has declared that Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, is not a criminal and should be granted clemency by the Federal Government.
The monarch made the call on Tuesday during Igboho’s visit to his palace in Orile Igbon, Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Speaking at the event, Oba Alao described the activist as a patriotic son of Yorubaland who stood against insecurity and violent herdsmen during a critical period in the South-West.
“Sunday Igboho is not a criminal. I am appealing to the Federal Government of Nigeria through our dear President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to forgive and have mercy on him. Enough of his stay abroad; we need him back home to continue his mission — but let his actions be guided by the law,” the monarch said.
He disclosed plans to formally write the Federal Government and the South-West Governors’ Forum, led by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, within 48 hours to seek a full pardon for the activist. He also hinted at consulting other prominent traditional rulers and South-West leaders, including the Alaafin of Oyo, to rally support for Igboho’s reintegration.
Olugbon further endorsed Igboho as a major voice in community-led security initiatives and said his return would strengthen the push for local vigilance in the face of rising threats.
Igboho, who was warmly received by the monarch and his wife, Olori Olusola Alao, expressed gratitude for the royal support he received during his legal ordeals, particularly his detention abroad and eventual release.
“Baba was one of the few monarchs who voluntarily signed the documents that helped secure my release. When I needed to bury my mother, he used his influence to ensure I could return home safely. I do not take his love and support for granted,” he said.
He appealed to President Tinubu to remove his name from the list of wanted persons and focus more on protecting Yorubaland from further security threats.
