PDP: Tough contest looms in Oyo South as Makinde’s ally, Adeniran declares interest
The Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Adeniran has officially declared his interest to contest the Oyo South senatorial seat.
Adeniran made his intention known on Saturday at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Secretariat, Molete, Ibadan where scores of supporters and party executives received him.
It is believed that the shadow election that will produce the Oyo senatorial candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, will be keenly contested as political bigwigs within the party are getting ready to wrestle with the incumbent occupant of the seat, Senator Kola Balogun for the PDP senatorial ticket.
Adeniran had, earlier met with Party leaders, local government executives and ward Chairmen from the district, where he promised to ensure good representation.
“I’m here at the state party secretariat of Peoples Democratic Party Oyo State to officially inform the party and to officially declare my interest to contest for the position of senator in the Oyo South senatorial district and to also make official declaration to the world that I’m contesting this coming election.
“Bearing in mind that the party has already released the guidelines towards the process of nominating candidate for the 2023 general elections and I find it auspicious to come out in the open to tell the entire people of Oyo South senatorial district that I’m interested in contesting for the position of Senator in that senatorial district. Earlier before now I have made consultations in all the nine local government areas in the Oyo South senatorial district”, he said.
A statement by the Executive Chairman’s Media team further indicated that Adeniran has extended his consultations to all PDP stakeholders in his senatorial district.
“I have met with the party leaders in all these nine local government areas, I have met with the executives and local government chairmen in all these local governments in line with the program that has been earmarked for this particular process, and as you also know that our party has already said that the sales of forms has commenced, so any moment from now I will also go further to purchase the form and contest for the primaries in PDP Oyo South senatorial district”, Adeniran added.
Speaking further on his ambition, Adeniran, an ally of Governor Seyi Makinde told journalists that he is now convinced to contest the Oyo South Senatorial seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“I am finally convinced that God has confirmed to me to contest for the election. Therefore, I am making this humble request that you agree with the vision”, he added.
He promised to put in place a robust feedback mechanism, within Ibadan and Ibarapa zones, adding that he has intentions to consolidate on Governor Seyi Makinde’s road map to accelerated development, as a Senator of the Federal republic of Nigeria.
“The reason why I’m coming out to contest is to avail the people of the senatorial district of my service to provide quality representation and to let them see an established feedback mechanism which suppose to be between the constituents and their legislator and to also contribute to the growth of infrastructure in the senatorial district so as to assist what the Oyo State Government is already doing in area of education, health and other infrastructure facilities.
“While I ensure physical development in our Senatorial district, I will also safeguard the interest of constituents and initiate a regular feedback mechanism”, the Oyo SUBEB boss assured.
While fielding questions on whether he has consulted the state Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde about his ambition, Adeniran said, “everybody has seen that the governor is transforming the state from poverty to prosperity and I’m serving under him, he’s my principal and my leader, he’s the leader of the party, it will be a great disservice and out of point for me not to have informed him of my interest and as a leader and a father of all, he said you’re free like any other person to aspire, the people, the party members will decide at appropriate time without any problem or any rancour”.

Ugandan Court Hands Ex-LRA Commander 40-Year Sentence
In a historic ruling, a Ugandan court on Friday sentenced former Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) commander Thomas Kwoyelo to 40 years in prison.
This landmark decision, marking the first time a member of the notorious LRA has faced trial for war crimes in a Ugandan court, follows the group’s brutal two-decade insurgency against the Ugandan government.
Kwoyelo, who was convicted in August on 44 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, faced charges including murder, rape, torture, pillaging, abduction, and the destruction of settlements for internally displaced people.
Michael Elubu, lead judge of the case at the International Crimes Division (ICD) of Uganda’s High Court, delivered the sentence in the northern city of Gulu, underscoring a rare moment of accountability in the decades-long history of the LRA’s violence.
Judge Elubu stated that Kwoyelo retains the right to appeal both his conviction and sentence within 14 days.
Kwoyelo, who was abducted by the LRA at the age of 12 and later rose to a low-level command position within the organization, denied all charges brought against him.
The Lord’s Resistance Army, founded by Joseph Kony in the 1980s, sought to establish a regime based on the Ten Commandments. Under Kony’s leadership, the group unleashed widespread terror across Uganda and neighboring regions, resulting in over 100,000 deaths and the abduction of 60,000 children.
The violence eventually spread to Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the Central African Republic.
