Oyo APC to Makinde: Impeachment Plot Claim Is a Bad Script Written to Attract Sympathy

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports of an alleged impeachment plot against Governor Seyi Makinde, describing the claim as “a badly written script” designed to distract the public and generate sympathy for the governor.

The party also alleged that the narrative was being used to project the governor as a victim amid rising political tension in the state.

Some members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, reportedly loyal to Governor Makinde, had on Tuesday denied involvement in any impeachment plot. The lawmakers also claimed that certain prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and former First Lady in the state, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, were being wrongly linked to the alleged plot.

But in a statement issued in Ibadan on Wednesday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC dismissed the claims, insisting that they were unfounded and politically motivated.

The party faulted the inclusion of the named personalities, describing it as “unsubstantiated and misleading.”

The APC said: “Governor Makinde ought to have been impeached long ago if members of the State House of Assembly were alive to their responsibilities, in view of several cases of abuse of office recorded against him since May 2019.”

It further alleged that the impeachment narrative was orchestrated by the governor’s allies to manipulate public perception ahead of future political developments.

“Governor Makinde just decided to get some of his yes-men to implement a badly written script aimed at offering him a soft landing in the minds of gullible supporters, especially now that it is almost certain that he might not have a political party to sponsor any candidate in the 2027 general elections,” the statement added.

The APC also claimed the story was designed to divert attention from recent allegations raised by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, over alleged moves concerning the Olubadan stool.

“Sad enough, an informed source had it that the impeachment story was sold to mitigate the effects of the revelation made by former Governor Ayodele Fayose about the plan to dethrone the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja (Arusa 1). But no external person is interested in an impeachment process against a governor who has already reached a cul-de-sac,” it stated.

The party maintained that no amount of propaganda or blackmail would stop what it described as the inevitable political consequences facing the governor.

“Meanwhile, no amount of blackmail or propaganda can save Governor Makinde from impeachment. Allegations of misappropriation of local government funds, land scams, contract inflation, and diversion of the federal government’s N50 billion relief fund meant for victims of the Bodija explosion are impeachable offences which shall come to bear sooner than later,” the APC added.

It insisted that the impeachment claim was merely a diversionary tactic that would ultimately fail.
