The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, Sunday Echege, for allegedly severing the left wrist of his wife, Chinonso Echege, over suspicions of infidelity.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, on Tuesday, confirmed that operatives attached to the Okpuje Division apprehended the suspect on Sunday with the help of law-abiding members of the community. The machete used in committing the crime was also recovered.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Echege confessed to the act, claiming he was driven by suspicions that his wife was engaged in extramarital affairs.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a thorough and timely investigation to ensure the suspect is prosecuted.
CP Uzuegbu further urged couples to resolve disputes through love, understanding, and legal means rather than resorting to violence.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
