WHO Enhanced Efforts in Reducing Burden of Chronic Diseases in Libya

World Health Organisation, WHO country office has completed an extensive workshop on Non-communicable disease Dialogue with national counterparts between 6th- 8th November in Tunis.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease, are collectively responsible for almost 70% of all deaths worldwide. And in Libya the NCD burden is estimated to account for more than 76% of all deaths and more than 41% mainly due to heart diseases.

During a 3 day workshop, the consultation have focused on identifying and addressing the current gaps the and challenges in health care services at primary and secondary level from NCD prospective and worked on the framework to improve the health care based approach on NCD risk factors mainly the cardiovascular, the hypertension, and the Diabetes through a well-defined Package of Health Services, also to strengthen national capacity of the core health care cadre to obtain the optimum service delivery, and moreover, governance to accelerate the country response for the prevention and control of NCDs in emergency settings.

This workshop outcome is in line with the national, regional and global targets of the 66th World Health Assembly endorsed the WHO Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs 2013-2020 (resolution WHA66.10), in reaching of a 25% relative reduction in premature mortality from NCDs by 2025.
