Cholera Outbreak: Oyo Rep, Oseni Urges Constituents to Stay Vigilant, Embrace Proper Sanitation

Published

on

Amid the recent cholera outbreak in some parts of Oyo State, Chairman of the House Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Engr. Aderemi Oseni, has called on residents of his constituency to stay vigilant, urging them to strictly adhere to sanitation protocols to help prevent the further spread of the deadly disease.

Reports indicate that over 130 people are suspected to have contracted cholera in Oyo State, with nine confirmed cases. Most of the suspected cases have been traced to six local government areas, including Ibadan North West, Ibadan South West, Ido, Akinyele, and Atiba.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, confirmed the outbreak, noting that six patients admitted to the Infectious Disease Centre in Olodo have since been discharged.

In a statement issued through his media aide, Idowu Ayodele, in Ibadan, Oseni, who represents Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency, expressed concern over the cholera cases.

He emphasised that cholera, a waterborne disease that thrives in unsanitary conditions, can be curbed with proper preventive measures.

“We must uphold good hygiene standards and ensure our water sources are clean and safe for consumption,” the APC chieftain said. “Cholera is preventable, but it requires the collective effort of every individual in the community.”

Oseni underscored the importance of regular handwashing, proper waste disposal, and treating drinking water as essential steps to minimize the risk of infection. He also warned against consuming food from unhygienic sources, stressing that cholera-causing bacteria can easily contaminate both water and food.

The lawmaker further called on local authorities and health workers to intensify public awareness campaigns about the symptoms of cholera, which include severe diarrhea and vomiting—both of which can lead to dehydration and death if not treated promptly.

“By being proactive in our hygiene practices and seeking medical help at the first signs of illness, we can collectively prevent the further spread of cholera,” he stated. “Let us prioritise the health and well-being of our people by taking this threat seriously.”

The Chairman of the House Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and lawmaker representing Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency of Oyo State, Engr. Aderemi Oseni has congratulated Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his victory as the Governor-Elect of Edo State.

In a statement released on Monday by his media aide, Idowu Ayodele, the lawmaker lauded the people of Edo State for their overwhelming support of the APC candidate.

He expressed confidence in Senator Okpebholo’s ability to lead the state toward greater development and prosperity.

Oseni further described the election victory as a reflection of the people’s trust in Okpebholo’s leadership and vision for Edo State’s future.

“Senator Okpebholo’s triumph is well-deserved. His outstanding legislative record and commitment to public service make him the right leader to propel Edo State to new heights of development,” he stated.

As the Chairman of FERMA, Oseni underscored the importance of collaboration between the federal and state governments to ensure infrastructural development, particularly in road maintenance. He pledged to work closely with the Edo State administration, as with other states, to achieve shared objectives.

“I look forward to partnering with Governor-Elect Okpebholo to improve road infrastructure in Edo State, just as we do across the country, as the well-being of our citizens remains a priority. Together, we will build a more prosperous Nigeria,” the lawmaker added.

Oseni urged the newly elected governor to remain committed to his agenda of progress, good governance, and the welfare of the people of Edo State.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken a commanding lead in the Edo State governorship election, according to results declared so far by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Okpebholo, who represents Edo Central in the Senate, is currently ahead of his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), by over 48,000 votes.

With results from 16 of the 18 local government areas (LGAs) announced at the INEC Collation Centre in Benin City on Sunday, Okpebholo has secured 244,549 votes.

In comparison, Ighodalo, a well-known figure in the business community, has garnered 195,954 votes. While Okpebholo has claimed victory in 10 of the LGAs declared so far, Ighodalo has won six.

Labour Party (LP) candidate Olumide Akpata is trailing far behind with 13,346 votes, placing him in a distant third position.

The election has attracted widespread attention due to the high stakes involved, with Edo’s political future hanging in the balance.

All eyes are now on the remaining two local government areas yet to be declared, as both the APC and PDP candidates brace for the final outcome.

INEC officials have assured the public of a transparent and credible process, urging calm as the last results trickle in.
