Chesterfield fan receives emergency treatment during Lincoln match before air ambulance lands on the pitch to fly him to hospital

AN air ambulance had to land on the pitch at Chesterfield vs Lincoln after a fan collapsed in the stand.

Players from both sides were taken off the playing surface for 30 minutes and the person in question received emergency medical treatment, which it was later confirmed they had responded well to.

The League Two clash was stopped in the 26th minute when the referee was alerted to someone in need of treatment in the East Stand.

It is thought that the supporter in question is a Chesterfield fan.

Chesterfield, who are battling to avoid relegation to non-league, kept football fans updated by posting on their Twitter account.

They wrote: “Our thoughts with the supporter involved and their family at this time. We wish them a speedy recovery.”

Lincoln also kept fans in the loop on their Twitter account, and shared a touching video of fans clapping when the helicopter was attending to the unwell fan.

They posted: “Superb levels of respect shown by both sets of supporters as the Air Ambulance departs the Proact Stadium.

“Our thoughts are with the supporter involved and their family. We wish them well.”

The score was tied at 0-0 before the worrying incident unfolded.

Four minutes after the game was restarted Chesterfield went 1-0 up when Alex Whitmore netted.

A Chesterfield spokesman said: “A supporter was taken ill and emergency treatment was administered by St John Ambulance and East Midlands Ambulance Service personnel, with the crowd doctor also in attendance.

“The decision was then taken to stop the match to allow an air ambulance to land on the pitch. The person was taken away by helicopter to a hospital in Derby, where he has responded well to treatment.

“We would like to place on record our thanks to the staff from St John Ambulance, East Midlands Ambulance Service and the the air ambulance, together with the crowd doctor and matchday stewards, for their efforts. We send our very best wishes to the patient and hope that he makes a full recovery.”
