FG Vows Crackdown on Fake University Certificates Nationwide, Expands Dragnet

The Federal Government has reiterated its determination to root out individuals wielding fake university certificates across Nigeria.
Education Minister, Tahir Mamman reaffirmed this stance during the inaugural quarterly citizens and stakeholders’ engagement held in Abuja on Tuesday.
Mamman articulated a transformative vision for the education sector, unveiling a comprehensive 13-pillar roadmap.
Emphasising the need for a robust database to facilitate effective planning, particularly at the foundational level, Mamman underscored the imperative of fostering skills acquisition and reducing the alarming rate of out-of-school children.
This renewed commitment echoes Mamman’s earlier pronouncements in January, where he asserted that security agencies would intensify efforts to apprehend individuals brandishing counterfeit certificates obtained from foreign institutions.
Mamman categorically labeled such individuals as criminals, dismissing any notion of victimhood. “I have no sympathy for such people. Instead, they are part of the criminal chain that should be arrested,” the minister remarked.
Continuing, the government signaled its intent to broaden its scrutiny beyond Benin and Togo, with plans to extend investigations to countries like Uganda, Kenya, and Niger.
Mamman stressed the need for a comprehensive approach, targeting institutions in these nations suspected of facilitating the issuance of fraudulent credentials.
The urgency of this crackdown was underscored by revelations from an undercover journalist, who detailed the ease with which he acquired a degree from a university in Benin Republic within two months, subsequently deploying for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
In response, the Federal Government swiftly suspended the accreditation of certificates from both Benin and Togo, initiating a thorough probe expected to conclude within three months.

FG Takes Over TASUED as Federal University of Education

The Federal Government has officially adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University of Education. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the transition on Friday, expressing gratitude to the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over one of the state’s most valued educational institutions.
The announcement was contained in a statement released by the Presidency on Sunday, highlighting the significance of TASUED’s transition and its alignment with national educational priorities.
“It is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria, and Dr Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating our children and instilling patriotic and leadership values at Mayflower School in Ikenne,” President Tinubu was quoted as saying.
The President further acknowledged the Awujale of Ijebuland’s instrumental role in preventing TASUED’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment. He described the transition as a strategic move aimed at strengthening teacher education and improving instructional quality nationwide.
“With a well-developed infrastructure and academic programme, the transition requires minimal federal investment,” the statement noted.
TASUED, established in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialised university of education. It was named in honour of Dr Tai Solarin, a renowned educationist and social reformer. The institution’s conversion into a federal university marks a historic milestone as the first federal tertiary institution in Ogun East Senatorial District, which includes Ijebu and Remo areas.
With this development, TASUED joins Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, and Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, as Nigeria’s three federally owned universities dedicated to teacher education. The takeover underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and strengthening the foundation of Nigeria’s teaching workforce.

NELFUND Warns Students Against Fake Loan Application Portals

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has cautioned students across the country to beware of fraudulent websites and portals posing as its official loan application platform.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its Director of Corporate Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND emphasized its commitment to ensuring that only eligible students benefit from the government-backed loan scheme. However, it warned against the increasing activities of scammers creating fake platforms to deceive unsuspecting applicants.
“The Nigerian Education Loan Fund wishes to reiterate that the ONLY official portal for student loan applications is www.nelf.gov.ng,” the statement read.
Students and the general public were urged to disregard any other links, websites, or messages claiming to provide access to the NELFUND Student Loan Scheme. Oluwatuyi stressed that any platform other than the officially designated website is unauthorized and should not be trusted.
“NELFUND remains committed to ensuring that eligible Nigerian students have access to financial support through a transparent and secure process. For verified updates and official information, always visit www.nelf.gov.ng or follow our verified social media handles,” the statement added.

Rep Oseni sponsors JAMB registration for 509 indigent students after WAEC support

A member of the House of Representatives representing Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency, Oyo state, Engr. Aderemi Oseni has sponsored the 2025 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration fees for no fewer than 509 indigent students in his constituency.
Oseni’s latest intervention follows his earlier sponsorship of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) registration fees for over 500 underprivileged students for the 2025 examination cycle.
His media aide, Idowu Ayodele, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan on Thursday.
The statement explained that the initiative was part of the lawmaker’s commitment to ensuring that no bright student is denied access to higher education due to financial constraints.
Speaking at the distribution of the JAMB forms on Tuesday, Oseni, who was represented by his Senior Legislative Aide, Hakeem Okedina, stressed that the programme was aimed at empowering young people through education.
“Education remains a powerful tool for transformation and the greatest investment we can make in the future of our youth. Last year, we did the same, and even before I contested an election, I had been supporting students for several years. It is part of me to encourage those with potential but lacking financial means to pursue their dreams,” the lawmaker said.
The APC chieftain maintained that his commitment to education was part of his broader vision to uplift young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“I am committed to ensuring that brilliant but indigent students do not have their dreams cut short due to financial challenges. My goal is to give them an opportunity to further their studies,” he added.
Some of the beneficiaries drawn from various communities in the constituency expressed gratitude for the lawmaker’s gesture. One of them, Adeladun Aishat, said, “I was worried about how I would register for JAMB after struggling to write WAEC. Hon. Oseni has given me hope to further my education.”
Parents and community leaders also lauded the initiative, describing it as a significant relief for many families. A parent, Mr. Yusuf Adekunle, said the support had eased the burden on many parents.
“Many students would have been unable to register for JAMB without this assistance. This is a remarkable step toward securing the future of many bright but underprivileged students,” he said.
He called on other public officeholders to emulate the lawmaker’s gesture.
Beyond the annual WAEC and JAMB sponsorships, Oseni, who also chairs the House Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), pledged to continue supporting education through scholarships, bursaries, mentorship programmes, school infrastructure, and skill acquisition initiatives.
“My goal is to ensure that every child with a dream gets the opportunity to achieve it,” the lawmaker assured
