adminThe Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, said there is no going back as Nigerians would drive the presidential ambition of former governor of the state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to its logical conclusion, adding that “we will all witness the inauguration of our political icon come 2023.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who described the APC National Leader as a “core political thinker” of the contemporary generation, also noted that Tinubu’s consistency in progressive politics stood him out as a beacon and rallying figure capable of delivering directional leadership to the country in the next dispensation.
He stated this in Lagos during the public launch of the South-west Agenda for Asiwaju 2023 (SWAGA ‘23), a group championing the ambition Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to be become Nigeria’s president.
Although, Tinubu is rumoured to be interested in succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, but the prominent politician is yet to make any public declaration.
The governor was accompanied by all members of the state executive council, lawmakers in the state’s House of Assembly, and members of Conference 57 to formally unveil the political group.
SWAGA, according to the governor was formed based on the belief in Tinubu’s vision and political philosophy that prioritise development of human capital and economy.
“Asiwaju Tinubu’s story has been a legend in vision, passion and action. These three values stand him out among his contemporaries in national politics today. It is no wonder the man stretches his arm of fellowship beyond Lagos, the state he led for eight years as a Governor and in which he bequeathed the legacy we are building on. He is nationalist in thinking and progressive in action.
“The SWAGA we are launching in Lagos today is a demonstration of Tinubu’s enduring political principles and strong vision. Those behind the movement took the three values and pushed them with passion. What we are witnessing today is the action from the vision and passion; this is what SWAGA represents. By the grace of God, we will drive this agenda to a logical end and we will all witness the inauguration of our political icon come 2023”, Sanwo-Olu assured.
The governor said he would join hands with SWAGA coordinators to take the agenda beyond the South-west region and make it a national movement.
Sanwo-Olu, however assured the promoters of SWAGA of his continued support, just as he promised to mobilise more political support for the group.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the group, Sen. Dayo Adeyeye noted that Lagos was the last state to be visited since the movement started last December.
The former Minister of Works and Media Adviser to late MKO Abiola, also informed that all political and traditional rulers across the Southwest were in tune with the agenda being pushed by the SWAGA.

2027: Sen. Dickson Dumps PDP, Joins Newly Registered NDC

adminThe Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, on Thursday announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that he had joined the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State, made the announcement during a media briefing in Abuja, attributing his decision to what he described as irreconcilable differences within the PDP.
The lawmaker said the emergence of the NDC would strengthen Nigeria’s democratic system by providing a credible opposition platform.
According to him, the party recently received its certificate of registration from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He said, “Last week INEC issued a certificate of registration and we now have the newest party in Nigeria known as the Nigeria Democratic Congress and our symbol is victory, the victory sign.
“So, my dear Nigerians, you now have a credible alternative opposition party known as the Nigeria Democratic Congress.”
Dickson noted that although the party’s registration took longer than expected, its eventual approval was a welcome development for the country’s democratic landscape.
“Yes, it is coming at this time. We would have wished it started some years or months back. We don’t control INEC and their processes; they delayed. We don’t also control the judiciary, but thank God it has finally arrived,” he said.
The senator also stressed that Nigeria’s democracy must not slide into a one-party system, insisting that political diversity remained vital for national stability.
“This nation cannot be a one-party state. Nigeria cannot be a one-party state. Nigeria is not designed to be a one-party state.
“We are a very diverse nation culturally, religiously and politically and that is the beauty of our country.
“So anyone or any party promoting one-party rule in Nigeria is mistaken. We build political parties and get involved in movements to access power for the good of the people, not for our personal benefit,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission recently announced the registration of two new political parties.
The parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance and the Nigeria Democratic Congress, bringing the total number of registered political parties in Nigeria to 21.
The announcement was made by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during the commission’s first quarterly consultative meeting with political party stakeholders for 2026.
According to him, the Democratic Leadership Alliance completed the required verification process, while the Nigeria Democratic Congress was registered in compliance with a Federal High Court order.
