Wolves ace Carl Ikeme reveals he is in ‘complete remission’ after battling acute leukaemia for the past year

WOLVES goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has revealed on social media that he is in ‘complete remission’ in his battle against acute leukaemia.

The 32-year-old was diagnosed with the condition just under a year ago, seeing him miss the entirety of last season.

But the Nigerian international confirmed on his Instagram page that he is now cancer-free.

Ikeme said: “After a tough year and intense chemotherapy throughout I would like to let everyone know I am in complete REMISSION.”

It is a remarkable recovery for the goalkeeper, who was named as the 24th man in Nigeria’s World Cup squad, as a sign of honour for their ill shot-stopper.

Prior to their game against the Super Eagles, Iceland showed their support in his ongoing fight beat the disease.

Ikeme will continue to battle back to full fitness, stating: “I still have hurdles to get over to be cured but I can hopefully now move forward with some normality.

“The support I have received from Wolves/Nigeria, the football world and from people from all over the world has been hard to put into words.”

Leukaemia attacks blood-forming tissue, generally in the bone marrow, and begins to over-produce abnormal white blood cells. It has 71 per cent survival rate after one year for men.

The condition was spotted during a routine pre-season check-up at Wolves, the club Ikeme made his professional debut for back in 2003.

And the Molineux outfit were quick to congratulate their goalkeeper on his recovery.
