The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo State Council, on Monday distanced itself from a report alleging that it endorsed a political aspirant, declaring that the union remained apolitical and could not support any individual seeking elective office.
The council described the publication as misleading and a gross misrepresentation of facts, stressing that the union would not allow itself to be dragged into partisan politics.
This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the council, Akeem Abas, and the Secretary, Temidayo Adu, in Ibadan.
The statement specifically faulted a report which claimed that the union had thrown its weight behind Hon. Stanley Dhikrullahi Olajide, popularly known as Odidiomo.
According to the NUJ, the publication was inaccurate and capable of undermining the credibility of the professional body.
“The attention of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo State Council, has been drawn to a misleading publication alleging that the union has thrown its weight behind Hon. Stanley Dhikrullahi Olajide.
“This claim is entirely false, baseless and a figment of the writer’s imagination,” the statement read.
The council clarified that the visit of its leadership and some members to the lawmaker was purely a courtesy call aimed at strengthening professional engagement and stakeholder relations.
It added that such interactions with public office holders were part of the union’s routine activities and should not be interpreted as political alignment.
The NUJ further emphasised that, as a professional organisation, it does not endorse political aspirants or candidates, irrespective of party affiliation.
The council also urged journalists to adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession by ensuring accuracy, fairness and objectivity in their reports.
It warned against sensationalism and deliberate distortion of facts, while calling on members of the public to disregard the publication.
The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, neutrality and responsible journalism, noting that it would continue to engage stakeholders without compromising its non-partisan stance.
