A 200-level student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has reportedly taken his own life due to financial difficulties.
The deceased, whose identity was yet to be confirmed as of press time, was a promising student from the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS), Department of Mass Communication, where he maintained an impressive cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.5 before his tragic demise.
Sources within the university community revealed that the young man ended his life at his private residence in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke, Ilorin, over the weekend.
His roommate, who had left for lectures, returned to find a distressing suicide note explaining his decision, citing his inability to cope with his financial struggles.
Investigations revealed that the deceased lost his father a few years ago, leaving his mother, a retired school teacher, to bear the financial burden of his education.
His financial difficulties reportedly worsened upon resumption last year, prompting his colleagues to rally around him by contributing funds for his tuition and sustenance.
A senior administrative officer at the institution, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the incident to journalists on Tuesday, describing it as shocking and deeply saddening.
He noted that the university had been thrown into mourning since the tragic news broke.
Meanwhile, authorities are yet to release an official statement, while students and faculty members continue to express their grief over the loss of one of their own.
