Video technology will be used in the Champions League from next season.
European governing body UEFA has voted in VAR (Video Assistant Referees) to be introduced from the 2019-20 season after a meeting of the executive committee in Nyon.
It will also be used for the 2019 UEFA Super Cup game between the Champions League and Europa League winners, and also in the Europa League from 2020-21 and for the Euro 2020 tournament and the UEFA Nations League finals in 2021.
UEFA’s decision will put further pressure on the Premier League to follow suit with tests underway this season while it is also being experimented with in the Carabao Cup.
“We are confident that introducing Video Assistant Referees in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of VAR in the UEFA Champions League, the world’s flagship club competition,” said UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.
