Jose Mourinho was found lying down on the Inter Milan team bus in floods of tears after winning the title in 2010, according to former director Tronchetti Provera.
The now Manchester United manager guided the Italian giants to an historic treble that year, and was completely burnt out by the effort he had put in.
Inter Milan won the Coppa Italia against Roma on May 5 before they retained the Serie A title against Siena just 11 days later, but their biggest test was still to come.
On May 22 Mourinho’s men – who had already knocked out Barcelona – went head to head with Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, and beat them 2-0.
It was the second time Mourinho had won the European crown in his career, and the first time Inter Milan had won it in 45 years.
Mourinho was understandably overcome with emotion after the game, but according to Provera the Portuguese had been feeling the strain ahead of the final.
“Straight after the game with Siena, I was looking for Mourinho and couldn’t find him anywhere,” Provera said.
“He had completely disappeared. In the end, I found him lying down in tears on the team bus, on his own. He was completely burnt out.
“We won the Champions League really in the semi-final with Barcelona. We went into the final calm and confident, because we had already achieved something extraordinary.
“That was where we realised we could win the Champions League, with the roar of the San Siro crowd.”
