The Ogun State Police Command has arrested 21 suspected cultists, including two soldiers, during a midnight raid at a hotel in the Osiele area of Abeokuta, the state capital.
The command said the operation, which took place on Friday, followed credible intelligence on the convergence of suspected members of a cult group in the area.
Spokesperson for the command, Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday, said the suspects were apprehended by a joint police team from the Odeda and Aregbe Divisions, the Anti-Cultism Unit, and the Special Weapons and Tactics team.
Odutola said the operation, led by Superintendent of Police Adejoh Israel, was targeted at members of the Aiye confraternity.
She added that several items were recovered from the suspects, including a cut-to-size locally fabricated firearm, a branded axe, and multiple blue berets — items typically associated with cult activities.
“The suspects have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Anti-Cultism Unit at Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation,” she said.
Odutola called on residents to continue to support the police with credible information to aid efforts in curbing cultism and other crimes in the state.
She reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across Ogun communities.
