Oyo APC Questions Makinde’s 2024 Budget: Recovery or Self-Enrichment?

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo state has criticised Governor Seyi Makinde’s 2024 budget proposal, stating it is defective, unrealistic, and fraudulent.

The party urged State Legislators to avoid rushing its passage into law without thorough scrutiny, as has been the case since 2020.

Mega Icon Magazine recalled that Governor Makinde presented a total sum of N434.2 billion as the proposed budget for 2024, labeling it the “Budget of Economic Recovery.”

However, in a statement issued on Monday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, Oyo APC faulted many aspects of the appropriation document, considering it a dubious attempt to mislead the people.

“Pundits and economic experts express concerns over Oyo’s future, citing the lack of innovation, policy direction, and accountability in Governor Makinde’s administration. The budget, quoted at N434.2 billion, with N260 billion expected in revenue, leaves over N170 billion in deficit—raising questions about its realism.

“A substantial N21 billion is allocated to the Office of the Governor without specific breakdown, and N485 million to Cabinet and Security services. Public facilities, notably the Agodi State Secretariat, reflect the ruins, despite allocations for maintenance since 2020.

“The governor’s claim of allocating 20% to education is questioned, given the neglect of public schools and the burden on parents for learning materials and exam fees. Oyo’s performance in agriculture, commerce, and job creation is also challenged, with allegations of chasing away investors through multiple taxes and property confiscation.” Oyo APC added.
