The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State on Wednesday dismissed media reports claiming that it had adopted a governorship candidate for the 2027 general election, describing the publication as speculative and misleading.
Some national and online media platforms had reported on Tuesday that certain individuals had been handpicked as consensus governorship candidates of the party in Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states. However, the reports did not disclose the identities of the alleged candidates or the basis for their purported selection.
In a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan, the state Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, urged party members and supporters to remain calm, assuring them that constitutional and democratic procedures would be strictly followed when the time comes for the emergence of candidates for the 2027 elections.
He said, “For the avoidance of doubt, we have no knowledge of any individual’s ambition as far as the 2027 elections are concerned. Our party has not started receiving letters of intent from willing contestants because it is not yet time.
“We are a party that conducts its activities in strict adherence to the rule of law as specified by the nation’s Constitution, Electoral Act, as well as the constitution of our great party. We do not put the cart before the horse because we understand the terrain and we shall not do anything capable of undermining democracy in the land.”
Sadare urged members of the party and the general public to disregard the report, insisting that the story did not emanate from the party.
He added that the party was currently focused on the successful completion of its congresses ahead of its national convention scheduled to be held in Abuja.
The spokesman further stated that all eligible members of the party interested in contesting elective positions in 2027 would be given equal opportunities.
According to him, “All eligible and competent members of our great party who have the intention to vie for political office in 2027 will be given an equal chance to pursue their ambition, while we assure the citizenry that our candidates will be those who can serve their best interest and deliver on their campaign promises.”
