The Supreme Court has laid to rest the local government election case involving the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON, Oyo state chapter (appellant) and the Seyi Makinde -led Oyo state government (respondent).
It will be recalled that the council chairmen and councilors had been sacked few hours after Mr. Makinde took oath of office as governor.
Makinde, in a statement made available to journalists by his Chief of Staff, Chief Bisi Ilaka, asked the elected Council chairmen to handover to the head of local government administration or the most senior directors in their local government areas and councils.
However, the apex court on Friday delivered its judgment in favour of the sacked chairmen elected during the previous administration of late Governor Abiola Ajimobi against the judgement of the Appeal Court which favoured Governor Seyi Makinde-led government.
The court said that Governor Makinde was wrong to have removed them.
Also, in its judgement, the Supreme court noted that the tenures of the sacked Council chairmen and Councillors have expired but all outstanding salaries and allowances must be paid with immediate effect.
Continuing, the court slammed a N20million fine against Oyo state government for perpetrating illegality.
