A tragic road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway claimed the life of one passenger and left five others injured on Saturday.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday in Abeokuta by its Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola.
According to preliminary investigations, the accident occurred when the driver of a Toyota Sienna lost control of the steering and crashed into the rear of a container truck.
“The impact led to the tragic death of a passenger, Ms. Miracle Chibuzor of Miracle Ultima International Ltd, who was seated in the front,” Odutola stated.
She further disclosed that five other occupants sustained varying degrees of injuries and were swiftly transported by motor traffic police to Famobis Hospital, Lotto, Mowe, for medical treatment.
The body of the deceased was evacuated to Idera Morgue for an autopsy and official death certification by medical practitioners.
Meanwhile, traffic police visited the accident scene to clear congestion and prevent further incidents caused by onlookers. The wreckage of the vehicles involved was towed to Sagamu Police Station for safekeeping and inspection by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO).
The police command expressed concern over the reckless driving habits of some motorists, noting that many prioritize financial returns over passenger safety.
“It has been observed that drivers drive with reckless abandon in disregard for the lives of their passengers but hurry to complete a circle of financial returns for the day,” the statement read.
The police urged drivers to maintain a safe distance from heavy-duty vehicles and exercise caution while driving to prevent avoidable accidents.
