Despite claims by the Port Harcourt police that they had canceled a planned candlelight procession to honor the late singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, a determined group of Port Harcourt residents took to the streets on Saturday to pay their respects.
According to Channels television reports, Segun Gbemisola, one of the organizers, expressed disappointment, asserting that they had followed due process, making the supposed cancellation directive surprising.
Despite the confusion, some attendees gathered at Pleasure Park, voicing their determination to proceed with the procession.
In a telephone conversation, Grace Koko, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, claimed that the participants had not followed due process.
Nevertheless, she stated that the police were monitoring the situation to ensure a peaceful event.
The cancellation claims seemed to have impacted the turnout, with many participants leaving the venue, resulting in a sparse crowd remaining behind.
A similar procession had taken place in Lagos State on Thursday, with several top musical acts in attendance to honor the singer, who had tragically passed away at the age of 27 under controversial circumstances.
Since Mohbad’s demise, Nigerians have been demanding a thorough investigation into his death.
In recent days, his remains were exhumed, and an autopsy has reportedly been completed, further fueling the quest for answers surrounding this tragic loss.
