Manchester City suffered a disappointing defeat to begin their 2018/19 Champions League campaign, with French side Lyon springing a shock at the Etihad.
Goals from Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir sunk Pep Guardiola’s men, with Bernado Silva pulling one back in a 2-1 defeat. Guardiola was forced to watch on from the stands after being handed a touchline ban during City’s Champions League exit at the hands of Liverpool last season.
He cut a miserable figure, undoubtedly frustrated that he was unable to pass on his message from the touchline.
And his team have now set a very unwanted record.
City became the first English team in the history of the Champions League to lose four consecutive matches, having lost to Basel at home in the second leg of their last-16 tie before suffering back-to-back losses to Jurgen Klopp’s men in last season’s quarter-finals.
Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta lamented the loss against the Ligue 1 outfit. ‘We saw two very different halves,’ he said.
‘We conceded many counter-attacks and at this level you get punished.
In the second half we dominated and played in the opponents half and created many chances.
‘I still believed we could do it. We reacted really well. On another day we could have come back. If you give cheap goals away it is difficult. The subs affected the game but sometimes it is too late.
‘I was told there were two penalties in the game but I did not see clearly.
‘It is disappointing. We are usually strong at home. Now you have to go and win away from home.’
