The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, reported that a policeman was murdered while on duty during the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protests on Thursday.
At a briefing in Abuja, the police chief stated that several officers were also injured by hoodlums who disguised themselves as protesters.
Egbetokun noted that some police stations were set ablaze by rioters.
He described the events in major cities on Thursday as “mass uprising and looting, not protests,” emphasizing that the leaders of the protests were absent, despite prior police warnings.
Hoodlums, according to Egbetokun, had taken over the demonstrations.
“Police stations have been destroyed. There have been attempts to take over government houses,” Egbetokun said, highlighting widespread looting of public and private warehouses and facilities.
The IGP mentioned incidents of unprovoked attacks on security personnel in locations such as the FCT, Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe, where one policeman was reported murdered and others seriously injured.
“In light of the current situation, the Nigeria Police Force has placed all units on red alert. Our officers are fully mobilised and prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to public safety and order,” Egbetokun added.
