The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) has confirmed the death of four individuals following a tragic accident in the Enugada area of Lafenwa, Abeokuta. The incident, which occurred on Friday, involved a truck that lost control and rammed into several motorcycles, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
In a statement issued by TRACE’s Public Relations Officer, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the unfortunate accident was attributed to a mechanical fault in the truck, specifically a brake failure.
The truck, descending from Itoku en route to Ago-Oba, veered off its path and collided with two motorcycles and a Honda CRV. The impact claimed the lives of two motorcyclists and their pillion passengers on the spot.
“According to an eyewitness, the truck developed a brake failure while descending from Itoku towards Enugada, Lafenwa. It rammed into two motorcycles and a Honda CRV, killing the two motorcyclists and their passengers instantly, while the driver of the Honda CRV sustained injuries,” Akinbiyi stated.
Initially, it was feared that six people had died, including the injured driver of the Honda CRV and a pedestrian.
However, the swift response of first responders and members of the public at the scene managed to revive two of the victims.
In a disturbing turn of events, the truck driver and his motor boy reportedly fled the scene and remain at large.
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to a local hospital by the police, while the injured Honda CRV driver is receiving treatment.
TRACE, alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police, has expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased.
The agencies also used the opportunity to remind motorists of the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, emphasising the need to ensure that all mechanical components are in proper working order before embarking on any journey.
