The Federal Government has revealed plans to release no fewer than 4,068 inmates nationwide as part of measures to decongest the nation’s correctional centres,” stated Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during the flag-off ceremony in Abuja.
He emphasised that the programme targets indigent inmates unable to pay fines, with N585 million raised by corporate bodies and philanthropists for their release.
“We flag off the release of about 4,068 inmates today, aiming to decongest custodial centres and prepare them for proper reformation and rehabilitation,” declared the minister.
The initiative focuses on inmates with fines and compensation not exceeding N1 million, aligning with international human rights standards and effective correctional practices in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision.
Commending the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) for dedication to humane custody and national security, the minister expressed intent to collaborate with the Ministry of Justice to address the growing number of awaiting trial inmates.
Ministers of Justice and heads of anti-corruption agencies from ECOWAS countries attended the meeting.
Controller General, Haliru Nababa appreciated the minister’s initiative in his remarks.
