The Federal Government generated approximately N2.4 billion from marriage contracts through its marriage registry in 2024, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has disclosed.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at a media parley with heads of agencies under the ministry, Tunji-Ojo also revealed that the government plans to strengthen border security to curb the influx of irregular migrants into the country.
The minister highlighted that marriage registration has become a significant revenue source, with the ministry exceeding its projected earnings in 2023. He noted that as of October 31, 2023, the ministry had already collected over N892 million from marriage contracts.
In addition to revenue from marriages, Tunji-Ojo disclosed that the government also raked in over N3.2 billion from expatriate quota applications, representing a 150% increase in overall revenue.
He further explained that the issuance of expatriate quotas contributed immensely to the ministry’s earnings. According to him, in 2023, the ministry generated over N1 billion from expatriate quota permits, significantly surpassing the N600 million target by an additional N600 million.
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing security measures at Nigeria’s borders to prevent illegal immigration, ensuring that only authorized individuals gain entry into the country.
