Fani Kayode denies arrest by EFCC

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has debunked claims that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, in a post on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday, said he was only invited by the anti-graft agency.

“I was never arrested by the EFCC. I was invited & I flew down to Lagos to see them. I arrived in their office at 2.00 pm & left at 8.30 pm,” the former minister said.

“I was granted bail on self-recognition. They were very polite & professional. Thanks be to God”, he said.

Fani Kayode’s comment came hours after the EFCC confirmed that he was being questioned by the commission.

The anti-graft agency said the former PDP chieftain  was questioned on allegations relating to the forgery of a medical report which he reportedly got to evade his trial before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

He had arrived at the Lagos office of the EFCC in the company of his lawyer around 1 pm on Tuesday but the commission said updates about his interrogation would be provided later.

Fani-Kayode is standing trial on an alleged N4.6 billion fraud before Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The EFCC had charged him alongside a former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, and two others on 17 counts of conspiracy, money laundering, and fraud.

During the last sitting on October 13, the judge had fined him N200,000 over his inability to appear before the court for his re-arraignment following the transfer of the former trial judge, Justice Rilwan Aikawa.

The former aviation minister was mandated to pay the fine or risk having his bail revoked.
