OYO State Government has implemented the payment of the newly increased monthly subvention to tertiary institutions in the state last Friday.
The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela disclosed this on Tuesday at the flag – off ceremony for National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), Oyo state chapter, 2017/2018 training program, held at Loyola College, Ibadan.

Revealing further, Professor Olowofela analyzed that the following subventions had been released to the state owned tertiary institutions : “The Polytechnic Ibadan got N83,701,442 as against N51,850,721, Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, received N27,557,507 instead of N12,778,753.60, while the Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa collected N27, 907,151.46k instead of N12,453, 575.73k.
The Commissioner continued, ” also, Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo received N101,089,091.61k against previous N55,544,545.82k, the College of Education, Lanlate received N40,291,138.54k instead of N12,145,569.27k, and Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igbo-ora collected N43,090,139.06k as against N17,045,069.58k. The variance in the increase is due to the peculiarity of each institution”, he explained.

While maintaining that the government is doing its best to help cushion the financial implication of running these institutions, Olowofela also emphasized that the dwindling accruals to the state, called for belt-tightening measures.

The Commissioner, however highlighted abolition of mass promotion in public secondary schools, adoption of 80% class/subject attendance in public secondary schools, establishment of School Governing Boards (SGBs) and establishment of Education Monitoring Group, amongst other policies as efforts made by the government to improve on the dwindling performances of students of public secondary schools in the state in external examinations.
