The Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released 58 out of 69 students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, who were earlier arrested for suspected internet fraud.
The students were apprehended in a midnight raid on hostels outside the campus at Oduduwa Estate area of Ile-Ife based on “actionable intelligence.”
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Coordinator for South-West, John Alao, confirmed the release, as did the EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, who stated that many of the suspects have been released, with the profiling of unreleased suspects ongoing.
The exact number of students released was not specified.
Additionally, the EFCC has decided to stop night-time sting operations in compliance with newly-reviewed procedures for arrest and bail, as directed by Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the Commission.
The EFCC assured the public of its commitment to upholding the rule of law in the execution of its mandate.
