Diego Simeone to miss Europa League final after UEFA hit Atletico Madrid boss with four-match touchline ban

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone won’t be allowed on the touchline for the Europa League final, after being slapped with a four-match ban by UEFA.

The Argentine was sent off during the semi-final first leg against Arsenal at the Emirates after insulting a match official

He was hit with charges of insulting an official and also one of improper conduct, and subsequently watched from the stands in the second leg as Atletico booked their place in Lyon, while awaiting his fate.

On Friday UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) announced that Simeone would serve a total four-match ban.

He has also been handed a €10,000 fine.

German Burgos, Simeone’s assistant, will now lead the Spanish side out in Lyon later this month, when they face French side Marseille.

Diego Costa’s goal in the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano handed Atletico a 2-1 aggregate win over the Gunners.

Atletico are bidding for a third Europa League triumph, having also been winners in 2010 and 2012, in what will be their fifth European final since 2010 and their fourth under Simeone’s stewardship.
