David Moyes will be handed a chance to revive his Premier League career this week with West Ham.
The 54-year-old Scot – sacked by Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland – has agreed a deal until the end of the season to succeed Slaven Bilic whose sacking will be confirmed this week.
Hammers chiefs believe a change is necessary as Bilic – embarrassed 4-1 at home to Liverpool on Saturday – has lost the ability to motivate his players.
Watford’s Marco Silva and former Manchester City bosses Manuel Pellegrini and Roberto Mancini were sounded out but none wants to break their contracts in the middle of a season.
That means Moyes will get the rest of this season to prove his worth and keep the club in the top flight, an outcome that could see him handed a fresh deal.
Asked about the West Ham job by Bein Sports yesterday, he remained unwilling to embarrass Bilic.
Moyes said: “I’m interested yeah, but at the moment it’s not available.
“I’ve been there myself and I know what Slaven must be going through. He will be wanting to get a result as quickly as possible. If it becomes available then yes, but at the moment it’s not available.”
Moyes had already agreed a deal with West Ham before the interview however. He will get a two-year deal if the club are happy with his work over the next six and a half months.
He has also received assurances that he will be able to bring in his own staff – and players – and have money to spend during the January transfer window.
Despite the failings of Bilic, club chiefs remain convinced that the squad in which they have invested so heavily has the potential to move up the table.
Should Moyes save the Hammers from the drop but fail to impress, they will turn again to one of their first choices – Silva, Pellegrini or Mancini.
Silva is also being sought by Everton as a potential long-term replacement for Ronald Koeman.
Pellegrini has a lucrative contract at Chinese Super League club Hebel China Fortune while Mancini took over at Zenit St Peterburg in June.
