The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has arrested a suspect and seized cannabis worth N48.5 million alongside other contraband valued at N220.4 million in Kaduna State.

Spokesman for the Federal Operations Unit, Zone B, Saidu Nuruddeen, disclosed this in a statement on behalf of the Comptroller of the unit on Thursday.

Nuruddeen said the cannabis and other items were recovered in separate operations carried out on August 21, 2025.

He explained that operatives, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted a vehicle at the Zaria Flyover, Kaduna-Zaria Expressway, and discovered nine sacks containing 185 compressed blocks of Cannabis Sativa, weighing 89.6kg and valued at N48,562,500.

A male suspect was arrested during the operation and handed over, along with the seized drugs, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution, he said.

In another operation, Customs officers intercepted three vehicles carrying smuggled goods. The seized items included 50kg of foreign parboiled rice, 8,100 litres of petrol, 178 bales of second-hand clothes, 225 cartons of spaghetti, 107 used tyres, and 37 electric shockers.

The duty paid value of these contraband goods, according to Nuruddeen, stood at N220,457,336.48.

He added that the NCS remained committed to curbing smuggling and other illicit trade, warning Nigerians to desist from activities capable of undermining the country’s economy.

The Customs spokesman also lauded the collaboration between NCS and NDLEA, describing it as key to enhancing border security and safeguarding public safety.
