Cristiano Ronaldo penalty: The REAL reason why the ball bobbled up that saw Real Madrid man volley home penalty

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S penalty mysteriously bobbled up because a water pocket had formed under the layer of grass.

SunSport talked to gardening expert Peter Seabrook, who gave his opinion on what led to the freak of a spot-kick occurring.

This graphic explains exactly how and why the ball bobbled up for Cristiano Ronaldo last night
This area circled red is where a water pocket would have formed underneath the turf

It ultimately led to the Real Madrid man netting a volleyed penalty past PSG keeper Alphone Areola after the ball lifted off the turf.

Seabrook said: “If turf was put down onto fairly heavy soil a puddle could certainly form beneath it such that when trodden on would squirt up through gaps between the turf and could lift a light football.

“A number of our Premier League pitches are now on very free draining “soils” where puddling under turf is very unlikely.

“I do not know how Spanish pitches are constructed.

BT SPORT: But the ball mysteriously moves up just before it is struck

“Is it likely that the penalty spot has been recently re-turfed. Once the turf has rooted down into the soil/substrate below it would be unlikely to have a puddle under the turf.”

The Portuguese star helped the Spanish giants to a 3-1 home triumph in their Champions League clash against Neymar, Cavani and co.

On the stroke of half-time, Ronaldo stepped up to hammer a spot-kick past the PSG keeper.

But it was HOW it went in that left most people baffled. The ball bounced, of its own accord, which meant CR7 essentially volleyed it home.
