Coroner’s Inquest into Mohbad’s Death Begins Amid Media Restrictions

The Coroner’s inquest into the death of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, began its proceedings on a Friday at the Magistrate court in Ikorodu, Lagos.

Journalists were denied access to the courtroom without explanation.

Magistrate Taofikat Adedayo Shotobi, the coroner, informed the parties involved that the day’s proceedings were focused on discussing the procedures for presenting evidence.

The actual hearing of evidence was scheduled to start on Friday, October 13.

Mrs. Funmi Falana, representing Mohbad’s family, along with other lawyers, announced their intention to bring witnesses to the inquest, ensuring that justice was served.

On September 18th, 2023, the law firm of Falana & Falana Chamber had written a letter to Justice Mojisola Dada, the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State, requesting an investigation into the “very tragic” and “mysterious” circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

In response, Magistrate Shotobi explained that she was acting on the directives of Hon. Justice Mojisola Dada to convene the inquest, as mandated by Section 14 & 15 of the CORONER’S SYSTEM LAW of Lagos State, Cap C15, Laws of Lagos State 2015.

Mohbad, the Afrobeats artist, tragically passed away approximately two weeks ago at the tender age of 27.
