Ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar asserts that the merger of Nigeria’s opposition parties will contribute to forming a more robust front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Atiku emphasised, during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council Nigeria (IPAC) in Abuja on Tuesday, the paramount importance of safeguarding democracy.
He voiced concern over the APC’s actions, steering Nigeria towards a potential one-party dictatorship, imploring IPAC, under the leadership of Yabagi Sani, to mobilise opposition parties for a stronger collective stance against this looming threat.
“I criticised INEC for conducting subpar elections, citing discrepancies in voter numbers. I called on the National Assembly to prioritise constitutional and electoral reforms, specifically advocating for electronic voting reforms, to ensure transparent elections and safeguard our democracy. I firmly believe that despite its flaws, democracy stands as the best form of government, and I am dedicated to collaborating with others to preserve it in Nigeria”, he said.
The IPAC team’s visit was facilitated by its National President, Yabagi Sani.
