Anthony Martial has been offered a five-year deal by Manchester United in a new blow to boss Jose Mourinho.
United’s board are keen to tie Martial down to Old Trafford until 2023, despite the manager’s determination to get rid of the striker this summer.
Martial is set to agree the £130,000 a week offer believing he will outlast the manager.
The French forward was axed from the squad for the defeat by Spurs on Monday, after being substituted after 60 minutes in the loss at Brighton a week earlier.
In July, Mourinho fined Martial two weeks wages for quitting Manchester United’s pre-season tour in America to attend the birth of his son, Swan, in Paris.
Martial’s agent Philippe Lamboley had already annoyed Mourinho by claiming in June that the player needed to move because he had missed out on a place in France’s World Cup-winning squad.
The 22-year-old is entering the final season of the four-year deal he signed upon joining United from Monaco for an initial £36million in 2015.
United have offered him the one-year option in his original contact on top of this season to take him to 2020, plus another three years, as they bid to protect their investment.
The relationship between Mourinho and the United board, led by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, has become fractured over the summer with the club refusing to sanction the purchase of players they believe would not have a re-sale value.
Mourinho’s position at Old Trafford is safe for now, but he is under increasing pressure to turn around United’s worst start to a Premier League campaign since 1992.
