After months of intense campaigns and political intrigues, the people of Ondo State have re-elected Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as their governor for another four-year term.
The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, declared Aiyedatiwa the winner on Sunday at exactly 2:30 pm.
The announcement was made at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation center in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Aiyedatiwa, the incumbent governor, secured a total of 366,781 votes, defeating his closest rival, Ajayi Agboola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 117,845 votes.
The APC candidate’s overwhelming margin of victory highlighted his dominance in the election.
“Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Prof. Akinwumi announced before an audience of party agents, election observers, and journalists.
The final results showed that the APC clinched victory in all 18 local government areas of the state, delivering a resounding win for Aiyedatiwa and reinforcing the party’s stronghold in Ondo politics.
The collation process, which commenced in the early hours of Sunday, saw the APC maintaining a commanding lead throughout. Despite brief breaks in the proceedings, the results remained consistent, sparking celebrations in Aiyedatiwa’s camp as the outcome became evident.
Aiyedatiwa’s re-election extends his tenure at the Government House in Alagbaka, Akure, for another four years.
His landslide victory represents a significant setback for the PDP and its candidate, Ajayi Agboola, a former deputy governor of the state.
The election, keenly observed nationwide, was viewed by many as a barometer for the APC’s influence in the Southwest, ahead of the forthcoming national elections.
