Sango Festival: Alaafin calls for protection of Yoruba cultural heritage.

THE  Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III has reiterated that Sango festival is one of the most ancient, traditional and major festivals of the Yoruba race, being a social practice and festive events deeply connected to the social, religious, cultural and political institutions in Yoruba Land.

Between the 16th and 25th August this year, thousands of cultural enthusiastic and adherents converge at the Alaafin’s palace in Oyo town to celebrate the ancient and annual Sango Festival, which marks the beginning of the traditional new year.

According to Oba Adeyemi, “our cultural resources should be concentrated on the cultural orientation of our children by exposing them to the heritage of their forefathers and uplifting the heritage as a world- acceptable tourist center, which will serve as a great investment towards human capacity and promotion of creativity of our forbears.

“There is no doubt that Yoruba Civilization is one of the enduring human legacies in the world today and probably the most suited African culture to arrest the attention of the world in this era of globalization, therefore it is necessary for us to promote and Preserve its cultural elements”, the monarch added.

The representatives of Brazilian government, Denilson Montero said the government of Brazil recognized the celebration of Sango Festival and ready to give necessary support for promotion of Yoruba cultural heritage.

He commended the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi for his role as custodian of Yoruba culture.

Also, the Deputy Director, National Tourism Development Corporation, Chioma Annette emphasized the need for Nigerians to give priority to the promotion of their indigenous culture.

The cultural Ambassador to Alaafin, Paula Gomez said the celebration of Sango Festival is an event organised to showcase the rich Yoruba cultural heritage.
