Invitation: Air Peace boss, Onyema appears before House of Reps

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of an airline company, Air Peace, Mr Allen Onyema is currently in the House of Representatives Chamber.

Onyema is present at the plenary following an invitation by the lawmakers.

The purpose of the invitation is to commend the airline boss for airlifting Nigerians from South Africa for free, following the xenophobic attacks and massive looting of businesses owned by foreigners in that country.

It is expected, as resolved by the House of Representatives that Onyema will be recommended for a national award.

Air Peace To Evacuate Nigerians From South Africa For Free

Air Peace Airlines has volunteered to send an aircraft to South Africa from Friday, September 6, to evacuate Nigerians who wish to return to the country, free of charge, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed.

According to a statement signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Ferdinand Nwonye, the development follows the recent xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians in South Africa.

“The general public is hereby advised to inform their relatives in South Africa to take advantage of this laudable gesture.

“Interested Nigerians are therefore advised to liaise with the High Commission of Nigeria in Pretoria and the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg for further necessary arrangement,” the statement read.

South Africa Killings: Authorities must tackle longstanding impunity to end xenophobia

In response to the “follow-up” meeting between the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Lindiwe Sisulu and the Minister of Police Bheki Cele with Heads of the Diplomatic Missions represented in South Africa “to find a lasting solution” to xenophobic attacks in the country, Shenilla Mohamed, Executive Director of Amnesty International South Africa, said:

“Longstanding criminal justice failures and populist rhetoric are some of the reasons behind the latest round of xenophobic violence against refugees, migrants and asylum seekers in South Africa.

“For many years, South African authorities have largely failed to address past outbreaks of xenophobic crimes that have been seen in the country since at least 2008, including bringing those suspected to be responsible to justice.

“Political leaders must stop making discriminatory and inflammatory remarks about migrants and foreign nationals especially during their election campaigns ahead of the polls.

“Rather than making comments that risk fanning the flames of xenophobia, the authorities must act to counter stereotypes, eradicate discrimination and foster greater equality and social cohesion in South Africa.

“South African authorities must ensure effective protection for refugees, migrants and asylum seekers against xenophobic attacks. The government must take concrete steps to hold suspected perpetrators to account. That begins with tackling impunity for past xenophobia-related crimes.”
