A gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of All Progressives Congress APC (APC) in Oyo State in the last election, Engr. Oyedele Hakeem Alao, on Sunday, congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President, Kashim Shettima, on their resounding victory at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.

Recalled that the 5-man Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) panel headed by Justice Haruna Tsammani, had ruled that various petitions filed by the former vice president and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; a former governor of Anambra State who was also the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) at the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, as well as that of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), lacked merit.

The Tribunal, then in a unanimous decision, upheld the victory of Tinubu in the February 25 presidential election, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Asiwaju of Irokoland in a statement he personally signed and made available by his Media Office, described the verdict of the tribunal as an affirmation of the will of over eight million Nigerians who cast their votes for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, in the February 25 presidential election.

According to him, Nigerians had spoken through the ballots with the party working hard for the victory, noting that the court with the judgment has validated the decision of the citizens who have confidence in President Tinubu and his team to deliver the real dividends of democracy to Nigerians through the ‘Renewed Hope agenda’.

He maintained that the judgment was sound, detailed, and comprehensive, stating that the judges displayed unmatched courage in the discharge of their duties without succumbing to intimidation by the opposition who deployed various antics to sway the judgment in their favour.

He said, “I congratulate the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the leadership of the party at the national level, the state and the teeming members of the party across the country, on this well-deserved victory at the Presidential Election Tribunal Court.

“The unanimous judgment by the Justices
was an affirmation of the trust Nigerians reposed in President Tinubu when they massively voted for him during the presidential election believing that he would take the country to the next level through the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“I sincerely believe that the judgment is a further testament to the fact that the judiciary is the last hope of the people of this great country of ours.”

President Muhammadu Buhari, Wednesday, insisted that there is no law in Nigeria that requires him to produce his certificates in a bid to prove his eligibility to run for Presidency.

Buhari argued that that under the 1999 Constitution, he was only required to be educated.

He stated this through his counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN, while adopting his final brief of argument in opposition to the petition the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, filed to nullify Buhari’s 2019 re-election, at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja.

The President also urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition challenging his election and his educational qualifications because it lacked merit and substance.

He said: “The law is well settled and the case-law is crystalized on the point that the 2nd Respondent (Buhari) cannot go beyond provisions of sections 131 and 131(8) of the 1999 Constitution.

“The case-law is replete with decisions of this Court on the subject. We cannot amend the constitution.

“We need to make it very clear at this point that the Constitution and laws of the land do not expect any Certificate to be tendered or attached.”

Counsel to the party, Aliyu Lemu has approached the Tribunal seeking to strike out the petition.

Chairman of the Tribunal, Justice Mohammed Garba after listening to all parties in the suit gave his ruling.

In his ruling, Garba said, “we find it expedient to grant the application as prayed. It is granted and leave is given to the petitioners to withdraw the petition and as a consequence, the petition is dismissed.”

The tribunal, therefore, acceded to the request of the party and its presidential candidate Pastor Habu Aminchi and as a consequence struck out the application.

Lagos State Governor-elect, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday said that he was confident of victory at the Lagos State Gubernatorial Electoral Petition Tribunal.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sanwo-Olu expressed the optimism when he came to the tribunal sitting at the Ikeja High Court Complex, to sign a response to two petitions challenging his victory at the March 9 governorship poll.

The petitions were filed by Chief Owolabi Salis of the Alliance for Democracy and Prof. Ifagbemi Awamaridi of the Labour Party.

Sanwo-Olu arrived at the premises at 11.14am alongside the Deputy Governor-elect, Mr Obafemi Hamzat.

After the signing, the governor-elect told NAN: “What we came here to do is to put an official deposition to the challenge by two gubernatorial candidates.

“We are certainly confident because Lagosians have spoken, the people went out on March 9 to cast their votes.

“It was devoid of any form of incident, there was not one incident reported officially. We trust that the tribunal will do its job well and Lagosians will be happy.”

Sanwo-Olu said that it was the duty of the tribunal to determine if the petitions had any merit.

“It is a process that all of us must submit ourselves to; that is why we are here today, and we are confident that the tribunal will do its job well,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu promised that his administration would undertake judicial reforms for speedy administration of justice.

“Lagos has championed judicial reforms in the last 20 years, and my administration will not be different.

“We will still take bold steps to reform to better the entire process because we understand the importance of the sector,” he said.

Mr Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN), the head of Sanwo-Olu’s legal team, told NAN that he was also confident of victory for the governor-elect at the tribunal.

“We are working based on the facts on ground; we have been able to review the two petitions, and we are not in any kind of doubt that we have sufficient and credible answers to all the allegations in the petitions.

“Until today, his excellency (Sanwo-Olu) was not served any petition. The APC was served but he personally came to the tribunal today to sign for his own process.

“Immediately he signed, he filed a reply. This is to show that we are prepared for these petitions, and we have no problem about the eventual outcome.

“The job of the governor-elect is to defend the election and protect the mandate of the electorate; that is what he came here to do,” Owonikoko said.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday reaffirmed the election of Dr Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Governor of Ekiti State.

Justice Stephen Adah led three – man panel of Justices of the Court of Appeal, in a judgment delivered dismissed the appeal filed by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Olusola Eleka and the PDP for lacking in merit.

The tribunal in the judgment also resolved all 7 issues raised by the appellants in favour of the respondents.

Respondents in the Appeal are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Fayemi.

Dismissing the appeal, Justice Adah described it as “unmeritorious”, and thereafter affirmed the July 28, 2019 judgment of the Ekiti State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which had earlier upheld Fayemi’s victory at the poll.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Fayemi and his party, the All Progressives Congress polled a total of 197,459 votes to defeated Eleka and the PDP who placed second with 178,121 votes in the July 14, 2018 election.

Dissatisfied with the announcement Mr. Emeka and his party approached the Ekiti state election tribunal which dismissed the petition.
