The State’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela made this disclosure on Thursday while receiving delegates from Bethel University in Ibadan, an affiliate of Bethel International School in America in his office at the state’s Secretariat, Ibadan.

Olowofela hinted that there was low technical know how in the country, hence the reason Oyo state government in this year budget aims to create technology commission program which will soon herald Technology Incubation Centre to address challenges of transforming ideas into visible development as a short term plan. He averred that the long term plan is changing syllabus of schools to achieve permanent solution in improving on Students’ practical know how.

“In furtherance to achieve giant stride in
technical know how in the state, this was the reason the present administration led by Governor Abiola Ajimobi established Technical University in Ibadan”.

Also, the ex- council gaffer, Olowofela informed that there was no gender marginalization in state’s education contrary to beliefs from global communities that Africa marginalizes girl child in accessing formal education in the continent.

According to him, girls in the state are even taking the lead in the state’s education as among the 54,000 candidates seated for 2017 WAEC examination, not fewer than 26,000 girls sat for the examination and they did well.

“There is no fanatics of religion in terms of religion in the state which makes it one of the safest state in the country and this will help Bethel University to thrive as an educational institution in the state”, Olowofela added.

The Day one of the six-day orientation programme kicked off with a welcome address from the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ayobami Salami. Professor Salami welcomed the students to an institution where educational training achieves a balance between sound theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on experiences and skills in different academic disciplines as well as vocations.

Continuing, the Vice Chancellor said, “in addition to the curricular requirements, it is mandatory that all students register and obtain certification in at least two different vocations or trades relevant to their course or their wishes before graduation”.

According to his goodwill message, the Director of Local Government Affairs at the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Alhaji H. A Bello, who was represented by Mrs. F.G Hassan-Kukoyi, tasked the students to justify the huge investment of their parents and sponsors in their education.

In his lecture, Dr. Wasiu Odufisan, an expert with vast experience in Geoscience and Education Management, made the students understand that their past achievement is history. As such, they need to focus on what will make them stand-on every day. Odufisan urged students to brand and define themselves; stressing that it is not just sufficient to have a degree.

“Competition is everywhere but the world will always look for a man that sells what it needs. So you need to create value. If you are not a problem solver, the world doesn’t need you. You must see every problem as an opportunity begging for creativity and solution”.

While telling the students the importance of creativity, Odufisan added “knowledge is not power. It must have its power through application”. On time use, Odufisan encouraged the students “invest your 24 hours as if you paid for them. Use your time to your maximum benefit”.

Speaking at the event, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela reiterated that the university will tailor the students to put their minds to better use and make them ready for competition anywhere in the world.

Similarly, his counterpart in the ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Toye Arulogun enjoined the students to make good use of the opportunity they have. “You have an opportunity, don’t lose it”.

Emmanuel Olorunnisola, the Head, ICT of the University, took the students through a startling lecture session on “Online Registration and Matters Arising made them understand the need to be creative as well as the many things that could be done online. He also broadened the students’ knowledge on the school’s portal as well as the interactive online community designed for students.

Olatunji, also noted that Oke-Ogun Zone is the only location that deserves establishment of such an ivory tower in case it is necessary.

According to a press statement issued on Thursday and made available to Mega Icon Magazine, the Party’s mouthpiece described the Oyo State led APC government as a divisive entity that doesn’t take into consideration the configuration of the state.

The statement reads, “Ibadan and other zones jointly owns Oyo State but reverse is the case with the establishment of a Technical University in Ibadan at a time the only government University, LAUTECH, situated outside Ibadan precisely in Ogbomoso is rotten away due to lack of funds.

“If we may ask what’s the rationale behind citing of another university in Ibadan with numerous higher institutions of learning when Okeogun area with 40 percent of Oyo state landmass, 10 local government councils and population next to Ibadan in the state is lacking a University?”.

” It is noteworthy that LAUTECH total tuition fees paid by students from 100 level to 500 level was less than N40,000 throughout their studies while the N6,000 tuition fee was about 54 percent of the then N11,000 minimum wage during former Governor, Rasidi Ladoja’s administration”, the statement added.

Olatunji, however, disclosed that LAUTECH is encountering serious financial problems that has crippled her activities despite paying exorbitant school fees of N65,000 and above under the incumbent government at a time the minimum wage is N18,000.

Also, the Accord spokesman criticised the government for its inability to pay workers’ salaries.

“The parents of the affected students who are workers or pensioners are being owed several months of salaries, while the staffs and lecturers are also passing through hell to survive.

“This is the time for the sons and daughters of OkeOgun, Ibarapa, Oyo and Ogbomosho to realize that APC has nothing to offer them apart from suffering and pains.

“Majority of our people outside Ibadan zone are agrarians and civil servants who depends on salaries for their upkeep but they bear the brunt mostly because they lack industries and business ventures to cushion the effects of non payment of salaries to workers by the state government”.

THE Technical University, Ibadan will commence academic activities by September 2017. Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Olalekan Alli disclosed this yesterday during the handing over of a Central Library, Blocks of Lecture and Administrative buildings to the Oyo State Government donated to the University by the apex bank, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as part of its intervention towards the education sector in the state.

Alli, therefore reiterated that the State Government is committed to the establishment of Technical University  as part of its transformation of the education sector in the state, and thus expressed the firm belief that the first set of students will matriculate in September 2017.

The buildings, which are constructed on about 1.455 hectares of land, donated to Technical University, Ibadan by the include Central e-Library space for 500 students with 10nos of offices, 12nos of toilet facilities as well as block of 24 lectures room which has 11nos Administrative offices, furniture, borehole, Generating set, street lights, CCTV camera, air conditioners and additional toilets facilities for male and female students.

The buildings were received on behalf of the state government by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Olalekan Alli, the Pro-Chancellor of Technical University, Ibadan, Professor Oladapo Afolabi, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Abimbola Adekanmbi, Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun and other top government functionaries.

Receiving the project documents during the handover of the buildings, the Secretary to the State Government, Alli assured that the state will embark on additional developments on the two hundred-hectare University, adding that adequate security will be provided around the vicinity of the institution and the state as a whole.

The SSG, who appreciated the CBN for its intervention in Technical University, Oyo state, reassured that the buildings donated would be put to adequate use by the school authorities.

“We appreciate the efforts of the Apex bank to support and develop our education sector. The CBN has showed thahandeation is key to the development of country. We say thank you to the management and the entire staff of the bank for this gesture and assure that the building will be adequately put to use immediately,” he said.

In his remarks, the CBN Branch Controller, Lagos Branch, Mr. Omebere Iyari commended the Oyo State Government for the initiative of Technical University, Ibadan, saying that the unique institution will revolutionize technical skills development and education in the country.

He explained that the intervention has showed that CBN is beyond monetary and fiscal policies, stressing that the apex bank has a lot of intervention in education, agriculture and other sectors of the economy.
