A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted bail to the 12 aides of Chief Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho earlier detained by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The presiding Judge, Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who delivered the ruling on the application filed by the 12 applicants before the court, declared that it is clear that no charge has been brought against Sunday Igboho’s aides since their arrest.

While the remaining four applicants, the 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 12th applicants, were granted bail in the sum of N10 million each with surety in like sum also resident in Abuja.

The embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, (aka Sunday Igboho), has been granted access to medical care.

Also, the Beninise court ordered that he be transferred to another detention facility.

Igboho is now being tried by the court on fresh charges bordering on illegal migration, dubious connivance with immigration officers, and an attempt to cause civil unrest.

It would be recalled that Igboho and his wife, Ropo were arrested in Cotonou on July 19, while they tried to catch a flight to Germany. The court, on Thursday, ordered his wife’s release and returned him to police custody.

Sunday Igboho also denied claims by the Nigerian Government that he was trafficking arms and inciting violence in Nigeria.

His lead counsel, Ibrahim Salami, who disclosed this to journalists on Tuesday after the court proceedings in Benin Republic, added that his client told the judge that the Nigerian Government rather put him on a watchlist for resisting killer herdsmen.

Salami said, “Igboho said he never had any criminal record in Nigeria. He told the judge that the Nigerian government was after him because he was defending the Yoruba race against killer Fulani herdsmen.

“He said that he ran away from Nigeria because the government was after his life,” he explained.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso 1 has sent a delegation to Cotonou, Benin Republic to observe the proceedings of the court case involving Chief Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.

The first class monarch who did not disclose the identity of the delegation, in a statement by his Personal Assistant/Director of Media and Publicity, Adeola Oloko said those to observe the court proceedings where Sunday Igboho will be facing trial would be in court unfailingly tomorrow Monday.

Oba Adetunji stated this at his Popoyemoja, Ibadan palace today, Sunday while exchanging views with some leaders of thought comprising the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes President General, Prince Yemisi Adeaga, first vice President General, Dr. Tirimisiyu Oladimeji; Ekefa Olubadan, Senior Chief Lekan Alabi; Ajia Olubadan, Chief Wasiu Aderoju Alaadorin; Mogaji Makusota, Prof. Oluwasegun Adekunle and Personal Assistant to Olubadan, Mr. Adeola Oloko.

According to Olubadan it has become necessary in order to allay the fears of several people including protesters who besiege Olubadan palace every now and then that Kabiesi is not folding his arms over the travails of Sunday Igboho and his co-travellers.

He said, “Sunday Igboho lives in Ibadan, got married in Ibadan, rear children in Ibadan, built houses in Ibadan and as such he has the rights to be protected by Ibadan Traditional Institution within the ambit of the law just like any human being in Ibadan.

The first class monarch who stated that he was in constant touch with Yoruba prominent royal fathers, including Igboho royal crowns allayed public fears of a repeat performance of Yoruba-Fulani coalition of 1814. According to Oba Adetunji, students of Nigeria history may wish to be reminded that when some people during the period under reference chose to engage in territorial expansion to the sea, it took the Ibadan army under Balogun Oderinlo to repel the attack and stop the incursion near Osogbo.

Oba Adetunji, however urged the people to remain calm and law abiding as truth will prevail.

Department of State Services (DSS) has claimed that armed men suspected to be guards of Chief Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho engaged operatives of the agency in a gun battle during a raid on the home of the Yoruba Nation agitator in Ibadan on Thursday morning.

Dr. Peter Afunanya, the DSS spokesman, who stated this during a press conference in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Thursday following the arrest of 13 of Igboho’s armed men by a team of joint security operatives.

Afunanya explained that the raid followed intelligence that Igboho was stockpiling arms to cause chaos within the southwest region.

He said, “On approach to his residence, the team came under heavy gun attack by nine men suspected to be Igboho’s guards. Six were armed with AK-47 guns and three others with pump-action rifles.

“In the course of the exchange, two of the armed men were gunned down, while the rest were subdued and arrested. Only one operative, who was shot by the assailants in his right hand, sustained injury. He has, however, received medical attention and is very stable.

“The gun duel, which lasted an hour, offered Igboho the chance to escape. Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, is now on the run.”

He noted that two of Igboho’s men were killed, while the secret service said one of its operatives also sustained injuries.

Igboho was also said to have escaped during the gun battle and is currently on the run, with security operatives calling on him to turn himself in or be tracked down.

The 13 suspected armed agitators that were arrested consist of 12 males and 1 female. A large cache of charms, ammunition, among other items were also recovered by the operatives.
